If you have to ask whether or not they are worth it, then you probably don't need one in the first place. They have their uses depending on what product you're looking at.

Palm base handhelds aren't very useful with WM2003 and 2005 products hot on the market. Pocket PC based on Windows 2K3 and up from Dell and HP pretty much have more flexibility between applications and hardware as opposed to anything else on the market. This is all dependent on what you want to do with it though.

What is it that you're interested in?

Sony has some pocketpc sized full PCs. Some use Transmeta cpus and some use Pentium Ms, but they're full scale PCs just in a miniature size.
There's also the OQO.

If your questioning whether you should get one, then don't get one. espcially if you think you should because they look fun to use... IF you want a gadget to play with, don't get a pocketpc, you will lose interest in it fairly quickly.

I've had one for awhile and my friend got one to "compete" with me, after a week or two it just sat on his desk gathering dust....

I got mine with a keyboard and use it for notes, phone #s, reading, music/videos ,and puesdo daily planning.

my wife uses a pda phone (siemens sx66) and loves it. it is her pda, planner, contact list and everything. then she will update that to her laptop. but she is on-the-go and always has something going on so it is very helpful for her.

i have messed around with it but wouldn't buy one for myself unless it was pretty cheap. we got a deal on hers, the guy at the store screwed up with my corporate discount and gave us 50% off :D

This is a PocketPC by the way.

Things I use mine for:

TS into my box over wifi.

Sync with outlook:
Check/Send email
Daily planning
Contacts

Write/Edit/View:
MS Powerpoint
MS Word
MS Excel

Talk to friends via Skype via bluetooth headset (can also be done via wired headsets)

Surf the web and post on forums :)
Play games.
Take voice recordings of things I need to do
GPS for car (although recently replaced)
Listen to MP3s (Also recently replaced)
View digital pictures for a design course

Novelty:
Control most TVs
Alarm clock

They can do alot, but you have to want to use it and get comfortable enough with them to use it without thinking. That is when they perform at their best.

I use my Dell Axim for two things - GPS and contact / appointment info. The fact that it does both with ease makes it indispensible for either, so I'm glad I have it. Oh, and I also use it to read eBooks when I have downtime.

I use a PPC phone (Cingular 8125) and I absolutely love it. Something surprising I didn't know I'd do on it is a portable music player. The speakers on it are surprisingly good so I hook it up to my wifi and listen to shoutcast no matter what room in the house I'm in. I have wifi everywhere I go (school, work, home) so having my gmail downloaded to it 24/7 is definitely a nice feature to have. I use the PIM functionality a lot and have watched a few TV episodes on it while sitting in the parking lot waiting for the women to come out.

Another cool use is I can hook it up to my stereo system and stream internet radio through it, or my shared MP3s on my desktop. I have also taken it to friends houses for parties and used it in this manner. Definitely handy.

I would say as long as it has wifi you can find cool stuff to do with it, otherwise it's just a fancy PIM.

I just got an ipaq and within a few miutes i knew it was a keeper.
Plays videos, wifi internet, as fun as a pc, but pocket portable, unlike a laptop.
I'd get a pocket pc way before something like an ipod.

I'm just kinda shocked there is so little forum support/help sites.
