I've currently got a 3" Buck lock-blade pocket knife, in addition to a two Swiss Army knives (and clones). Anyway, I am thinking of getting another lock-blade, but I would prefer one with both a belt clip and one of the little knobs so you can open it with one hand. I can currently open my Buck one handed too, but that involves a flick, followed by a flip and a catch... in other words, its not something I like to do in the dark if I have a choice in the matter.

Other things I would like out of this knife:
-My budget is $50, but I would prefer $40 or under.
-Good blade that holds an edge. I sharpen my blades about once a month, but I would like it to stay in good form for 3 months of medium level usage without needing to be sharpened (I like to keep my blade sharp).
-As I said, I want a folding lock-blade, but the actual blade has to be under 4" so that I can legally carry it. I'm not planning to cut someone's nuts off with it, this will be used for utility purposes, but I want to be able to carry it around anywhere without having to worry about legal issues stemming from it (airports being a big exception to the "carry it anywhere" part).

I carry my Buck knife around all the time, but I want something that I dont have to worry about it falling out (I've been going sailing with my roommate from last year a lot as of late). Self-defense with it is a (minor) concern since there are a lot of off campus muggings, but, in 90% of those muggings where the intended victim produced a weapon of their own, the mugger runs like hell. Its unlikely that I'd be mugged as I am a pretty big guy and I do lift, so if I do get mugged it would likely be by a guy with a gun (statistically, most of the off campus muggings have been against girls or small guys, I remember one of the college policemen talking about that). My cousin, who is currently an Assistant DI at Parris Island, spent about an hour jabbing at me with a stick to impart the basics of how to handle a knife and how to take one away, but if the mugger has a gun, well... my name isnt Rambo.

***If I rambled, repeated myself, or misspelled every other word, its 3:30 AM here... in other words, past my bedtime.

I have a CRKT that I picked up for $25 a few years ago, it's one of their lower end knives.

I like it.

You might look at them.

If yer willing to pony up a few more bucks and want something that will last a lifetime and impress the chicks, get a folder from Klotzli. Kinda like the Surefire of knives. 400+C blades and carbon fiber grips. Will set you back a bit over a hundred, but would be money well spent in the long run. Just don't lose it :)

Since I collect them and have butt loads of them, I carry whatever I feel like picking up that day. But I don't really have any suggestion other than finding a knife that fits your mood and carrying it with you.

I personally like Benchmade Knives, but that might be a lttle out of your price range. I have heard Spyderco are pretty good like Yakko said.

I second the CRKT knives. Try one of their Kit Carson series knives. I love mine.

For a $40 budget you probably can't beat the CRKT knives. Especially for sailing, most are simple & have fewer parts. Spend a little more and get a Spyderco (lots of models to choose from), the half-serrated blades are great for utility use.

If you're looking for something to bet your life on, fighting-type knives, there are lots to choose from for $100 & up. Benchmade, Cold Steel, etc. But as you've stated that's more than you want to spend. Buck is a pretty good 'basic' knife, they had that one 'crosslock'? model with two blades and one with a single blade, I think you can get it with a clip. That or the CRKT. Gerber makes a pretty decent knife, too.

Here is a site with lots of info about a great many things.

Equipped

I bought this yesterday, and I love it.

The Wave

My opinion is that you should find the knife you want and save for it. Buying a knife on price alone is a bad move, because if the only reason you like it is because it is cheap, you might as well save all 40 bucks, because you will hate it. Of course if you find something you really like in that price range, then go for it. I am suggesting you do your research, and save a little more if needed.

I have this 2" locking knife that my mom picked up from Odd-Job for $3. It's the handiest little thing to carry around. Opens with ease and has a little pocket clip. It says Slaymaker on it.

I have a Spyderco Rescue and really like it. Its sharp and rugged, the KISS knives are good too.
