yeah, I'm curious...what is the quality of PNY memory? I see them cheap all the time at Best Buy, Staples, etc...but I wonder about the quality......Who makes their chips and such?

I had a couple PNY sticks a while ago.

Worked for me.

For $20 after MIR it is worth putting a stick or two away in case of emergency.

"BB has PNY ram PC2700 256mg for $199 After IR/MIR" <-- 19.99 :)

PNY has been ok so far and usually has better name brand chips (Samsung, Infineon). Lifetime warranty, but funny how they don't always put their name on the stick. K-Byte sells the off-brand stuff. Photocopy your rebate submission in case they "lose" it.
Edit - LINK ADDED.
OOS online. $44.99 with free shipping. Looks like a good deal.
$25 Rebate OFFER DATE: 04/06/2003 TO 04/12/2003 POSTMARK DATE: 05/12/03.
Looks like it goes through Parago: Offer #03-55444, PO Box 28515, Miami, FL 33102-8515.

You have to look at the sticks before you buy them. Just tell the associate you want to see the entire stack of the ram, pick through the goodies while they look at you like you are nutz.
Superman ram to Samsung, all flavors in there.
;)

Picked up one at BB and one at CUSA. All sticks that I saw were SpecTek chips and PCB.

CC carries PNY but they may not have the PC2700.

My store had 3 sticks left. 2 of them were Infineon chips, and 1 was Spekteck.

BTW, does anybody know if there's a way to submit the rebate to rebateshq? The rebate form says to go to Rebateshq, but I can't find the rebate on rebateshq to fill out my info.

I've found that if you're going to use PNY - go ALL pny. Their chips work well - but not so well that they can be mixed and matched with other chips. You always hear the experts saying "dont mix and match ram" - I think they do so because they own PNY :).

that said - I believe Im running a single 512 meg stick of PNY right now without incident. Had it in there with a stick of 256 meg crucial and it was very unstable. Froze on boot every other time.

hope I'm not putting my foot in my mouth, but the fact that PNY sells a least 3 different brands of ram shoots your theory down. I've found PNY rams to be either samsung, infinion, spektek(?), and at least two other makers. I have two sticks of PNY, one samsung, one infinion, they works together just fine. also another stick of pny samsung with my crucial, they're ok together too.

I may be wrong, but Spectek is a division of Micron. Crucial is the retail arm of Micron. Spectek is the new wholesale arm of Micron.

The OD PNY ram that I got is "S" pectek.

yeah they sometimes use nanya and mosel, but most of it is infineon , samsung , or spectek. spectek ram is exactly the same as crucial even the markings are the same and speed codes.

i have 2 256mb pc2100 (they were actulaly pc2700 -6 infineon but marked wrong) and they work fine.

I got the last of these at my local BB. Spectek chips on spectek pcb. In pc2100 these always worked fine for me. Hopefully pc2700 does as well!

Comp Usa also has the PNY 2700 256mb for 19.99 Ar. I picked up one today and my local store had a lot left.

I've used PNY sticks in PC100, 133 and ddr 2100 and 2700 over a number of years and different machines, mixed with other manufacturers sticks, and never had an issue. Overclocking is a mixed bag, but for commodity mobos I found it no better or worse than other commodity sticks. Honestly, I'm currently wondering about Crucial's high end these days, the 2700 512mb I recently bought from them won't go much higher than the PNY's or other Kingstons I had laying around. I don't know if its the current Mobo's I'm using or what, but I'm not stressing them very much and I can only bump up 5-7%-barely.

The two rigs I have up currently use xp2100's, one a soyo 266a and the other a biostar 400 via chipset. A question I have for the more experienced than I, is which should I dump first - the memory or mobos? Thinking about paying extra for higher end memory and resisting these less expensive sticks.

especially when you cna get this ram for ~34 from crucial or whoever..

The stick that I picked was a SpecTek too. It really pi$$ed me off when it gave me a 'memory dump' error on my MSI KT3 U2 with Win XP. I used my MemBench bootable CD and the stick gives a bunch of error right away. PNY IMHO was a great memory company when they were selling Infineon PC133 memory, but they are YMMV when dealing with DDR... :(
