The fan on my card is crapping out and being really loud. I have another card exactly like it, only 32MB and all it has is passive cooling. Don't they both have the same GPU? Is the fan really necessary on my 64MB card or can I remove it without risking damage to the GPU? They're both PCI.

i've seen them ship without fans
just using a passive heatsink seems to work as long as it is large enough and your house temp isn't too hot

just feel the heatsink while yur playing games
if it is really hot then throw on a small fan if not and it don't crash or give fragments then yur alright

personally I like to put fans on things that get hot in my computer

I had a passively cooled GF2 MX 64mb in a regular Compaq 8000z and never had a problem with the card overheating. Ran that setup for a good year with just a stock 80mm case fan and everything ran well. (AGP version).
