Hello all, my first deal (borrowed from another site no less). Resellerratings has a 4.93 for Tiger Direct but they shouldn't screw up a CD-R order eh? I ordered 3 and will post my results. Also I noticed that my shipping was cheaper if I selected Second Day shipping (i'm in Hawaii).

Probably not worth it unless you order a bunch. My shipping for one CD spindle came out to $8.50.. more than the price of the spindle itself!

For all those interested, I received my black diamond cd-rs today. Ordered on the 11th and received them on the 15th (12th and 13th being weekend).

The fastest Nero lets me burn them at is 24x, the box claims them to be 20x compatible. There are pictures of what I received at this Link, the spindles came in the boxes pictured. I just burned a divx and file seeking seems good even at the end of the cd (where I had trouble with my previous media, even at lower burn speeds).

I paid $23.97 for 3 spindles plus $9.04 for shipping making it roughly $3 to ship each spindle 2nd day air to Hawaii. I will follow up after i've gone through the spindle abit more but overall I'm pretty satisfied with my order, no rebates. Moogieboogie said the shipping was high and if your just ordering one it looks like thats true. Starting a pretend order, Second Day shipping is $8.01 for me on a single spindle, adding 2 more brought it up to $9.04 though so I guess YMMV.
As far as the black goes, the only advantage I know of is the claim of better scratch protection. They do look coool though ;)

They also have the 50 packs in Jewel cases for only $2 more. I ordered 2 sets of 50 and received 10 individual boxes of 10 CD-Rs each. Total was around $28

PNY = cheap a$$ media... I bought a bunch of 32x from BestBuy on a deal about a year ago. Most have discolored labels or peeling, cracking labels now. Many of them "tore" (bits of the recording area ripping, ruining your data).

Plus they are from TigerDirect. Strike two...

Just avoid it.

Whereas I bought a few 10 packs of these Black Diamonds from Best Buy at least 18 months ago, and just burned the last one a couple of weeks ago, and it was still good at 12x (max speed of my burner. The Fuji's that both I and my best friend bought from Office Max less than 6 months ago won't burn at anything above 4x, in either of our burners.

95% of the cd's that I burn end up being trashed within a week of burning them. I use my cdr as a means of large (or small) data transfers. I think most people who don't use their cdr for illegal purposes (whether it be movies, music, or porn) are in the same boat I'm in and they pretty much just want cheap meda. So I see no problem with these cd's...

K-Hypermedia sells CD-Rs that have the media sandwhiched between two piece of plastic. Peeling is impossible because the media isn't on the surface. I bought myself 3x 50 spindels of those babys @ $3/spindle ;)

tigerdirect sells your credit card info to other companies, be careful with them.

What burner do you have, and what were those Fuji's rated at (the actual plastic label, not any sticker placed over it)? Were those T-Y (M-i-J) Fujis, or something else (Ritek/CMC/other)?

That just seems really odd, as most people's experiences (mine included) are that T-Y Fujis are very high quality. That being said, I also seem to recall a couple of burners that for some reason don't like their dye formula.

What burner do you have,

Aopen CRW-1232a. 12x burn, 10x rewritable, 32x read. Justlink buffer underrun technology.

16x.

Taiyo Yuden.

As the first 30-35 from the first of the two spindles I bought burned at full speed, the manufacturing process and/or dye isn't indicated. Nor does the burner appear to be the problem, as the exact same thing happened to my friend. Same discs, purchased at the same location and time, Philips 8x4x32x burner. He burned about 2/3rds of the first spindle at 8x, then the rest just gave media speed errors at anything above 4x. His were stored in a desk drawer, in a chilly room (big guy, he likes to keep the A/C low); mine were stored on top of my desk, never got any sunlight (sun only gets into this room in the early mornings, and i keep my shades drawn until evening), at an average of 85 degrees F. Burners were cleaned, with no resolution of the issue. Tests on new Maxell, Imation, and PNY discs gave no problems burning at our respective full speeds, but older Imations gave precisely the same problem. The PNY Black Diamonds I bought, though, even though stored under the same conditions for 3 times as long as the Fuji's, still burned at 12x, to the last one. We both use Win98 and Nero 5.5, and plenty of RAM and HDD space.

*shrug* Your guess is as good as mine.

Just a note about PNY media. cricky claimed PNY media to be lousy and that may be true. I picked up these "BLACK DIAMOND" ones because they seem to have favorable reviews. CD-R media quality can vary even under the same brand name (ie Verbatim's Datalife vs Valuelife).

qIat: I have used KHypermedia before and while I got the feeling they were cheap, I never had any problems with them. I bet others would be happy to know where you got them for $3 a spindle.

Since when has burning porn been illegal? And movies and music can both definately fall under free use in many cases (personal mix cds, backups, etc.) I myself burn copies of my favorite cds for my car so they if they get damaged or stolen it won't matter.

Hi Guys, well i've burned a good 10 or 20 discs and the quality seems to be excellent. My previous media would error like crazy toward the end of watching an SVCD but these Black Diamond CD-R's not only look cool but play flawlessly. However, I burned an audio cd at the allowed 24x speed in Nero and ran into some audio corruption (scratched or garbled sounds). The wav files played fine so I reburned the cd at 16x and playback had no problems. Nero didnt offer a 20x burn option (which is what the discs are rated at) so I couldnt try that. Other burning progs might let you set the speed manually (clonecd, cdrwin). Anyway I really like the media and if no further problems arise I will be ordering more in the future!

Why are you trashing the environment? CDs have toxic chemicals in them and should be taken to your local hazardous waste collection facility.
