PNY and Bestbuy tried to rip me off

Yesterday I bought a PNY GF4 Ti4400 at La Habra Bestbuy. This morning I opened it up and found no driver CD, no 3D glasses, and GF3 Ti 200 card instead of GF4 Ti 4400. So I took the whole thing back to the Bestbuy, and guess what they told me. They couldn't refund or exchange, and that I must contact the manufacturer directly!!!
It really got me pissed off, but I was cool enough to take it to another Bestbuy located at Cerritos, which gladly let me change it with another new box. Now I'm sort of happy.

Next time open the shrink-wrapped package right there in the store and be sure to raise a fuss about the returns department screwing up in the examination procedure.

Humm, this is the second thread in one week where the ole switch-a-roo video card trick was played. I also suggest that you open the merchandise in the store.

man, that's gotta suck.. glad the other bestbuy let you get a new one.. sounds more and more like bestbuy is becoming frys.. whenever i get something from frys, i have the tendency to tear the box open to double check it.. due to an incident i saw while waiting in the cpu/memory area.. some guy was questioning a product, and when they opened it up, it wasnt the right one... 😛

So, what's the usual cause of such a mix-up? Was it because a customer had bought it, made a switch, and then returned it to Best Buy? Doesn't Best Buy check open-box returns to make sure a customer doesn't try to pull a switch? Or did that customer have a shrink wrapper at home so Best Buy thought it was an un-open box return?

It looked like it was factory wrapped box at the time I bought it. Even the card inside looked brand new, not even a hint of dust on it.
I think it was PNY who screwed up, not Bestbuy. Still, from a consumer's point of view, I didn't buy PNY's product direct, and it really pisses me off that Bestbuy saying they have no responsibility at all.

Bestbuy seems to have that problem.
I have seen several posts, on different boards.
Makes me not want to buy from them..
Sounds like they need some help with people skills also.

If PNY screwed up, there would likely be a whole batch of them sitting on the shelf. This was BestBuy's screw up, don't roll over, go there and raise a stink until they exchange it. Take a parent/friend with you, even if they can't attest to watching you open the box, BB will treat you better with another person there.

Best Buy IS evil.

Last May, on Mothers day, we went and bought a camcorder for our baby-on-the-way.

Well, we way overbought ($800, we wanted to spend under $500).

The thing is - the kid who sold it too us, he told us Circuit City had a special on accessories so he marked the camera down $40 (599..99 to 559.96) We bought it at the Rocklin CA store, but we tried to return it to the closer Arden Way, Sacramento store.

This stuff had never even been out of the shopping bag and they start asking each other - 15% restocking fee?

WTF? Its brand freaking new and unopened!

I went through about 6 people - all of which wanted to charge me a restocking fee when their policy says the fee is only on OPENED products.

Then the manager tells me that the $559.96 price is a code and it means the camera is discontinued or open (it was neither) so he cant take it back because I will screw up his inventory.

I am a very big guy, and I got as angry as a person can get without yelling or swearing - I leande over and told him in my super mean sounding, pissed off voice, that he would do the return - anyway, they did do it but it was like negotiating peace in the middle east.

Their problem is that as soon as you want to return something, they stop seeing you as a customer and start seeing you as a problem.

This has happened to my friend when we went to Best Buys to buy a stick of PNY 256MB SDRAM! We bought the SDRAM (Brand New), brought it home and tried to install it on his dad's PC however his dad's PC for some reason wouldn't boot with it. We went back to return it and was turned down by the manager for an exchange or return because the SDRAM didn't match the SKU# or the original packaging! They showed me the correct SDRAM that was suppose to be packaged and it was larger than the one we originally purchased. Looks like PNY and Best Buys has a problem!

Something similar happened to me with a cordless phone. On Sunday, I went to the store to buy a cordless phone. I bought a 2.4 GHZ Panasonic phone with answering machine for $200. When I got home, I opened the box up, there was no instruction for the phone, and inside was a 900 MHZ Panasonic phone. I was so mad. I went back and asked for a refund and they refused to give me one. I am never going to shop and RipoffBuy.

The CSRs who handle returns are paid near-minimum wage with no knowledge of the products customers are returning. That's the problem. Incompetence happens. But most of the time, I get a better deal at Best Buy than anywhere else. I recently bought a Klipsch Promedia 5.1 open box but when I opened it, everything inside was still factory wrapped and everything with nothing missing and no problems; only the box was opened. Looks like I got a good deal on it 🙂

Best Buy sucks

Ha people yelled at me in another thread cause I said the same thing. But you know, Best Buy does suck. If I had more motivation I would pursue a class action lawsuit for all the rebates that are never returned to consumers.

My friend, also being my coworker, wrote a lengthy letter to the corporate Best Buys about the incident and guess what their response was? "Sorry, it's our policy."

Best Buy by far has the worst customer service in terms of their policies and employees. I also forgot to mention that this happened to another friend more recently at the Best Buy in Brea after we purchased a 19" Samsung monitor. It was brand new but when we took it home, there was no power cable included and no instruction booklet! Unbelievable....
