PNG versus GIF

I'm working on generating dynamic images via PHP. Is there really any significant advantage to creating a PNG file versus a GIF file?

The files are dynamic and are not saved, but may be printed in the future if that makes a difference.
 
GIF is accepted in other programs a lot more often. Just depends on if you want to edit the file anymore in PHP or if you want to export to anything else.
