Take my D70 for example can shoot in 3 jpeg sizes (S,M,L) with 3 compression modes (Basic, Norm, Fine) and then RAW format, which is a .NEF file (Nikon Electronic Image Format)

A Fine Large Jpeg is about 3 megs (3008x2000), which is fine for well just about everything, the .NEF file is ~5megs compressed, i can take 5 of them on burst mode before the buffer kicks in. writes fast as hell for the data it contains

When you uncompress the .NEF file it becomes a 35 MEG TIFF! Or PSD depending on what you save it as,

Saving it as a PNG its about 30 Megs, PNGs don?t compress & Uncompress well IIRC, a camera that would save as PNGs would take forever to save an image, and be unusable

I?ve printed up to 22x34 from a .NEF file converted to a .PSD file and it looks like film

JPEGS allow the average idiot consumer the ability to take pics that look fine when printed up to 8x10 just fine, without the hassle of post processing, and everything supports them by default

yes but Tiffs and PSDs are better, and if you read 1 post above yours you will see that saveing them is difficult because of their size
