I want one. ISO 800 would be great...damn them for using SD memory though 🙁

What's wrong with SD? Pretty much everyone out there uses it except Sony and their proprietary crap and those losers who use xD or those oldtimers still using CF 😉 😛

Yeah.. back in the day, SD used to be seen as too slow.. today you can get crazy fast SD cards.. my SD card reads and writes 3 times faster than my camera can transfer to it and my camera is no slouch for recording from buffer to card either (>3 frames/second, 4 mpixel tiff) - I pretty much never have to wait for it. And it was cheap!

The speed isn't much of a concern (I know that pretty much any solid state card I buy will be as fast as or faster than my microdrive), it's the cost when you already have several gigabytes of a perfectly serviceable memory format...😛

Edit: Specifically, I like to do a lot of video sometimes (which is why I have the S1 IS now and, after seeing the S3 IS specs, want to upgrade to that later in the year)...this means I'd have to dump my (5GB) microdrive and buy a 4GB SD card, which isn't going to be cheap...

Also.. before you decide to give me more megapixels, give me a better quality sensor. I want low noise ISO800 in a dSLR before I need 6+ megapixels.

CF>SD

CF allows for the use of Microdrives and 6GB worth of storage.

You mean 8 GB, like so...

http://www.adorama.com/IDS8GBUC2F.html

Oh yeah, and Microdrives SUCK

Didn't know there was an 8GB CF card.

Still CF > SD, there is no 8GB SD card.

I dunno. I switched from CF to SD when I moved to the SD500 and I really don't miss the CF. Yeah, it was neat from a technical standpoint that it was IDE compatible, and it was nice to have the OPTION of a microdrive, but I've never come close to filling my 1GB SD card. <shrug>

I think I'm gonna have to buy me an SD700 once it reaches around $300 on ebay (in a year or so). IS on a pocket cam pretty much has me sold.

The DPreview.com Canon forums are ablaze right now! People are totally confused. The EOS-30D is totally underwhelming and won't be the upgrade that many EOS-20D owners wanted. Most people are going to either stick with the 20D, buy a new 20D for cheap, or move up to the 5D. Interest in the 30D seems low.

What is more puzzling is this new EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS. It's going to cost $1149. L-glass price without the red stripe! Should people dump their EF "L" lenses (24-105, 17-40, 24-70) and invest in this really nice EF-S walkaround? Or should they ignore EF-S knowing that full-frame sensors will continue to drop in price? If the latter happens, EF-S becomes worthless as do APS-C cameras. Or should people just invest in what they need NOW instead of making purchases that are smart for the long-term?

This latest launch from Canon is both underwhelming and nerve-wracking. Just what does all this mean? Where is Canon going?

And many in the Canon forums are becoming more and more jealous of Nikon users. Nikon is putting out some damned-good glass!

As for me, I will stick with my EOS-20D (for sure) and my current lens combo (EFS 10-22, EF 24-105, Tamron 28-75 F2.8). If they 17-55 reviews are out-of-this-world, I may have to re-evaluate.

L lenses have been exclusive to full frame lenses, thus explains why the EF-S lens doesn't have the L badge. They can't really make a 17-55 F/2.8 that's FF without having it weigh about 10lbs.

the nikon 17-55 2.8 isnt full frame but it works on all bodies. 🙂

Bigger sensors are the way forward ^_^

When the hell is Canon going to release the successor to their IP8500 printer? It has been around forever and now it's even hard to find! :|

yep, I do a lot of video too on my S2. However, it can only write a continuous 1GB at a time, so even if I had a 4GB SD card, I'd have to record 4 separate videos. It isn't a big deal since most videos I take are less than a couple minutes anyways. I'm not sure if the S3 has this same limitation or not.

I'm sure you could sell your CF cards and make upgrading to SD cheaper.

Yes, from the DP Review page info on the S3, the 1GB limit is still there...I guess it's mostly a convenience thing, but maybe if 2GB SD cards aren't too expensive these days, I could just pick up two of those. I'm just bitching because it would be easier (and cheaper) to keep my microdrive, I'll get over it eventually. 😛 (And as you said, I should be able to get at least a decent price if I were to sell the microdrive...I'm hoping I can still get a decent price when I sell the S1 too 😛)

I love having everything in one camera. I don't plan to get into DSLR's for a long time (partly because of the lack of photo/video convenience thing, and partly because they're just too damn expensive with the lenses I'd end up buying and all 😛)...the S1 is quite good at both (even more so for the S3, it looks like), so it's really the best camera for my needs. I realize not everyone may share my opinion, but I don't care - I buy a camera for myself, not anyone else 😛

Indeed. Buy the camera for your needs

DV = 24fps that I can actually track each frame in an editing program. Cameras compress the video and you can't trck the frames properly as they are compressed = useless for my purposes. Video still looks pretty decent from a digital camera though. Just not great for fast stuff as it gets all blocky.

DSLR produce an amazing image that aother cameras can't come close to matching unless you resize the image down 😛. I don't print big pictures but I still want that image quality!

D200 for my tastes seems more ergonomical then the 20D/30D and the 5D but I prefer the 20D and 5D images better. I'll wait as I'm in no hurry for one. Also the 5D doesn't have a flash. Come on man I want a flash. Yes I know pros don't use internal flashes 😛 but dam it is an inconvenience to me.

I got an S2 IS in Nov, so I was worried that the S3 upgrade would be as big as the S1 to the S2. Seems like it's just an extra megapixel, a bigger screen, and a few more features. I'm glad I didn't wait, although I'm sure the S2 will get a decent discount now.

interesting.

too bad I already have a 20D. gonna have wait for a few more upgrades like 40D or 50D whatever there pattern will be.

Now for sony or who ever to come out with a Digital Camcorder that does HD. but is compact. Vacation videos would rock with that.

Sanyo announced one last month.

$800.

I hope these cameras have better low light performance than my A80.

Not only does it have trouble focusing, but the flash is underpowered.
