Plzzzzzzzz Help me, my network doesn't allow incoming connections

I can't send dccs, setup an ftp, run ssh, accept incoming connection.......................


I can't even send dccs, run apache, ssh,ftp I can only do it within the network

I have tried nmaping everything but no ports are open.

But it is strange since people can download off me from kazaa or morpheous (i'm not sure how people can download from me there but not anywhere else)


When I was running linux no one connect to me by ssh or telnet


any ideas how to get around this?

can we get a little more info about your network? such as.. internet connection type?, are you running a router/firewall?

probably your ISP, maybe behind a firewall or maybe behind a nat thingamagic

its the same way for me on my colleges network. Stupid firewall.

You probably have a dynamic IP address, as well as what was remarked above.
Determine your current external IP address. Try re-connecting to your ISP several times over teh course of a couple of days and note if there's a change in the address.

If the external IP address changes, you must apply to your ISP for a fixed IP address service.
If the IP address does not change, then your ISP probably blocks specific types of inbound traffic.

But I don't understand how people can download stuff off me from kazaa??????? isn't that comparable to dccing or sending a file???

I do not beleve so. I beleve kazaa uses established upstreams to transmit it, or possibly if the "downloader" is unable to connect to you, you get an instruction to connet to them. I am sure that no one can conect to me around my proxy (stupid school), but they can still DL from me.

What do you mean by established upstreams?

By upstream, I mean that -your- computer is initiating the conection to theirs and then transfering that way (they are bi-directional). When they try to connect to you, chances are they are hitting a different server somewhere in your path. It's probably making your real info invisable.

Main question... Do you have a fixed IP address?

Kazaa is a very different kettle of fish from running your own server. Kazaa is able to deal with dynamic IP addresses and many other non-optimal methods of Internet connection. Just because Kazaa works, does NOT mean that others can directly FTP/etc to you.

Kazaa and Morpheus works by the client software running on your PC telling a local search engine (in Kazaa, called a SuperNode) every time your computer initiates an Internet connection that you are online, and how to find you. This effectively tells other Kazaa users where you are.

Not without licensing or developing your own technology, having a server with a fixed IP address somewhere... If you could do that, you wouldn't be in college of course

Not really sure what to suggest - it's obvious that your college is worried about misuse - and students, if you did give them a fixed IP address, boy would they misuse that. The only recourse is to find out what is possible within the limitations of the blocks placed on your college account, or, get a separate dial-up/DSL/cable account! (once again, mebbe not possible for a student on campus).

This seems similar to napsters old firewall downloading. Theres regular download, where u are server and the client connects fo download but then there is firewall downloading, ur client actualy pushes or uploads the data to the person who asked to download it from you. So thats pretty much usless in ur situation. Try scanning for open ports and set whatever to that port...

Funny thing is, i have pacbell dsl, and i have a hardware firewall, but i also have aol, if u use the aol adapter and the static ip aol gives me i can just get around the router....intresting huh...

oh yeah but anyways mabey the network dosent want u to run ftp, ssh, apache, or use dccs on company time and company bandwidth. Go try to read the terms ur company prolly had u sign

well it's a school network...I would understand if they blocked use of kazaa and other file sharing apps but they don't and in the school handbook it says the network can be used for file sharing (legal file sharing) that is. Right now it just setup dhcp...
