Anyone,
First time buying an AMD Atholon, 1.4GHz, retail box. When I took heatsink/fan out of box the wax tape just fell off the thermal compound, is this normal?
Isn't the compound supposed to be sticky?
Should I return?
PLZ HELP before I install this and the thing cooks on me!

Thanks in advance.

slow down there...dont have a heart attack ;)

You need to remove the tape in order for the thermal compound to work. So, it falling off is of no consequence. However: if you intend to use the thermal compound, make sure you dont get anything in it--the tape protects it from crap...so dont be touching it :p

I would recommend getting a tube of thermal PASTE--Arctic Silver II, or some stuff from Radio Shack...works TONS better than thermal pads.

the compound should be a little "tacky" but that's about it...not really sticky. it's better that the tape fell off than that you accidentally installed the HSF with the tape on! heheh.

To all that replied so quickly....

THANK YOU!

I know the tape comes off once ready to install the HSF (been workin in this field for 13 years), never had to install a HSF, didn't know how tacky the compound should be.
I know the Artic Silver type compounds are much better, but since it's my first AMD I wanted to keep everything "retail" for warranty purposes.
You guys are all GREAT!
