I need a Gigabit switch to connect another PC to the web. There are many kinds out there and i'm lost. After looking around i found out that the minimal number of ports that comes with one is 5, i only need 2 but i'll have to get that one cauise i got no choice. Anyway, i have the Verizon FIOS service and all PCs are behind the router using a wired connection. This is the diagram of my connection as of now:

Internet -- D-link router -- Main PC on 1st floor
| - cable to second floor
|
RJ-45 wall mounted jack w/ 1 port -- My PC

Basically what i want to do is plug the switch into the RJ-45 jack to create 2 ports so i can hook up another PC to web in addition to the one i already have connected.

I need something that will support my 100Mbps internet connection. These are the top selling switches at newegg i've been looking at. Will any of them do the trick?

CAT6 is capable to deal with Higher "Speeds".

However with the current regular Giga there is No difference since Cat5e capacity is within the needs of the current Giga.

If you have cat5e use it. If you need buy cables buy Cat6 so it would last for the next level of Giga when it become available.

I just ordered this switch http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833316076 to replace a d-link 8 port that was damaged by lightning. Yes lightning made it into my home entering the antennas on my wireless router burning it out and the port on the switch it was connected to. I'm still using the switch on different ports but I decided to get the hp switch for the better design plus lifetime warranty.

Jack, do you think that home fiber will leap-frog any future Giga on copper? (Assuming that someone brings out a cost effective termination system for home owners.)

Cheers.

I am positive that the leap would occur.

When? No way to know because it is more an general economical issue rather than available technology.

All I can say is that if I was building a new House I would install CAT6 to every place, and according to the house layout few Fibers leading to key spots letting the fiber sitting there even if it Not currently used.

I'm sure all the hardware vendors would love to resell us everything with fiber connectivity. Motivating that from our perspective with a real benefit at home will be another matter though.

Eventually it would come, Not so much because of pure Networking, but due to content/media streaming, and other Home gadgetry that would end up being Computer/Network dependent.

Just a quick point - nobody every believed copper would go over 100 Mbs. Now we've got 10 Gbs on copper. Technology always advances.

umm...maybe I missed something, but why do you need a gigabit link? Sounds like you'd be fine on a plain ol' fast-E switch since FIOS doesn't even come close to saturating 100Mbps and you don't seem to have any internal servers (as indicated by only needing 2 ports).
