The shower isn't draining very well, and when you turn on the sink and it drains, the water comes out into the shower.

Must mean its a pretty shallow clog.

Would a snake work for this?

Yes, a snake *should* work. Of course I had to rent a power rooter a couple weeks ago for a similar problem...but it was only when we ran a full load through the washer.
 
Draino works, or doesn't work, based on what is causing the clog. I like the foaming stuff, cleaned out our bathroom sink nicely. A snake would work, but is messy and time consuming.
 
I'm too lazy to pull out my snake before trying Draino.

I'd wait until as long as I could without using anything in that bath, use a whole quart bottle of the gel, and let it sit overnight without using anything in that bath.

You are going to be diluting the Draino by whatever water is in the trap and whatever standing water is in front of the plug so that is why I said to use so much and let it sit so long without use.

 
I've been using this enzyme stuff I got at the hardware, Drano Max ("Build-up Remover"). It's not the old powder-pellet draino, which is NaOH (lye), but is gentler, easier on the pipes and not caustic. Liquid in a 1/2 gallon plastic bottle. I don't follow the directions, though. I use less, am more patient with it. Generally put in a couple of ounces, a little warm water to spread it a bit in the clog and let it sit for hours before using the shower again. After a few of these the water flows freely in the shower again. Repeat when necessary. If that didn't work I'd pay a visit to my tool lending library and get a snake.
 
..I've had good luck w/Liquid Plumber. But a good snake out is prob.best followed up with a gallon of Liquid Plumber.

If you get a couple of inches of water in the shower (in my case it's easy since my shower is in my bath tub), it's easier to get a seal with the plunger.

I think a plunger is good to use even if you use something to dislodge a clog. That plunger can give you that something extra to get it moving, plus it's cheap to use (don't have to buy another unless it breaks).
 
The clog is usually right at the top of the drain. Pop off that little metal piece and stick a coat hanger in there.
