Plumbers.. help me fix my sink.

I guess I'm not a plumber, because I can't figure this one out.

The metal nut on one side of our sink cracked about oh, 8 months ago.. causing it to leak.

I went out and bought some new parts, but I can't get it to work permanently.

Basically, the pipe keeps slipping out of the compression ring after a week or two, nomater how tight I tighten the nut.



Any advice?

It's not.. I have to pull it down slightly to actually get it under the sink drain. Maybe it's too long?

Too long wouldn't push it apart. Are you hitting it with a trash can or something like that?

I'm not sure I understand the question. The drain is leaking? Did you apply plumbers putty to the threads before you screwed it all back together?

I've never had a problem with drain pipes leaking. There's no pressure in them.

Edit-All my sinks have metal drains and plastic pipes and I've replaced a few drains in my house with no leaks.

No, not the drain.

Where the drain connects to the pipe.

There's a plastic compression ring dealie that goes over the pipe, and then the nut screws onto the end of the metal drain.

The pipe keeps slipping out of the compression ring.

im going to thread jack! but since there are people here who may know WTF they talking about.

we have a outside faucet that is leaking. is it hard to replace? and any sights with directions?

You should need to take off other pieces before you screw in this one. That's always been my experience. I think that pipe is too short.

Not that I can see . I'd take pictures of the faucet and go talk to someone at Lowe's or Home Depot.

If it is just a washer or O ring, it is easy to fix. If not, you might have to replace the whole thing (Silcock).

Eli, are you sure you have the compression ring going the right way? Several people I know who were having problems had it pointing the wrong way. If the ring is on correctly and you have the correct size (not 1 1/2" going onto a 1 1/4" pipe) and you hand tighten it, it is very secure does not move at all.

Eli, are you sure you have the compression ring going the right way? Several people I know who were having problems had it pointing the wrong way. Yeah, I'm pretty sure. The tapered side should face downwards, right? The tapered, thin edge fits inside the nut.. and when you tighten it, it should compress.. pretty basic stuff.. lol

I bought the sink repair kit at walmart.. came with new pipes, new compression rings, nuts..

I have never bought any repair parts for plumbing from Walmart, so I don't know what the quality is like. It could be the plastic is cheap/thin and is flexing when you tighten down allowing it to slip off.

I would return that and head to Home Depot and get your parts there. I can't remember the brand they sell (maybe Dearborn or Oatey), but is good quality as I have used in a number of times.
