I need a heatsink fan for a amd 1700. My 2200 has a thermalTake (red/blue lights) and I like it, performance plus pretty, but alittle loud. Im really not too concerned about loudness, or pretty, just good cooling and cheap.

I bet you could get some nice buys in the For Sale & Trade forum, like a stock retail AMD AthlonXP 2500+ cooler (many folks buying retail 2500+'s, then upgrading their heatsinks). Maybe post a WTB: thread? Or for a brand-new one, how about the Taisol 760-series? $9.95, forged copper/aluminum construction, three-lug clip.

I like the slk900a alot, but think thats pricey for just a heat sink. Has anyone used this Thermaltake A1745, it has 2 fan controllers, temp control and all copper.

I wanted to get one of those svc fans that I heard so much about ppl oc'ing with and it cool just fine. It was a ugly little black fan job that was like 4 or 5 dollars if i recall, but can't find it any more.

Eventually this is going to be a crazy mod project with 4 rainbow led window fans for my GF. But I just want it up now. The window fans I want to probably run slow and quiet, since there will be 4 of them, and more for decoration than use. So I assume seperate fan controllers - one for window and one for cpu will be useful.

Yup, I'd recommend one. Any standard fan controller will work, I don't have a specific brand that I use. I have seen about 4 different designs and they all do pretty much the same. What you want is easy access, some are just wired loose and have to be closed in the case door. Others come in the form of a switch on a 5.25 device.

Best,

I have a Volcano 12 and love it. I have some forced air induction through a duct feeding it room temp air, but even without it cools very well. Right now My barton 2500+ is at 2500MHz @ 1.825V... it 36C idle and 43C under full load.

The fan doesn't have a whine either, just a rushing air noise... maybe its due to the 3 props?

at any rate, I picked it up locally for $25.99 and the thermally controlled fan is great, speeds up under load, otherwise is pretty quiet when I'm just surfing.

I really like the design and performance of the Thermal Integration v77x or v86x HSFs (SVC.com, KDComputers.com, Atech.com). Their new "metal sandwich" design (A8641L) looks like it should be great too, but I can't find anywhere to buy it.
. But for good ol' cheap and quiet brute force cooling there's not much better than the Fanner/Speeze Whisper Rock II (5F263B1M3G) on Newegg - $13. shipped last I looked.
