Someone I know is selling her car and listed it on AutoTrader.com. She got a response and wasn't sure if it might be a scam or not. It doesn't feel right, but I have no experience in this case. How could she protect herself just in case?

Thanks,
JC

My red flags went up, but I couldn't explain why. What was the biggest red flag you saw? (I apologize for being naive).

WTH DUDE?!?! THE WHOLE E-MAIL IS A GIANT RED FLAG!

the only possible way i see this to be a scam is that
they guy is selling something on ebay and the buyer (which is the guy he say that own him money) will sent you payment thinking you are the seller
it'll be hell to pay later for you, if this turn out to be the case.
you'll be out of a car and have to refund the money.
if you sent rest of balance to him, and you'll be taking out the money off your pocket.

First and foremost is someone paying her a large sum of money, more than the car is worth, and asking her to refund the difference. This is a classic scammer move. The person cashes the check, does the deal, and then the check bounces. The other party has the item, the extra money, and the seller owes the bank a large sum of cash.

Never, ever fall for something like this.

12,000 + 24,700 = $36,700 for an Acura Integra. I don't know about you but that should raise some red flags already. Ever heard of the phrase if it's too good to be true....

Do people just live under rocks these days?

This scam has been on the local and national news, probably in every newspaper more than 2 pages long, on the radio and all over the internet for about 6+ years.

Ok. Enough with the insults please. 😱 🙂 I'll try to be more vigilant in the future. Thanks for the help.

Can I get this locked. please before others get their comments in. 😀

As said before, the cashier's check is going to be a fake, so you (your friend) would be screwed.
Don't be stupid. Think.

I think the alleged offer is actually $12,000 to be deducted from the $24,700 that the scammer says he will send.
