I just bought a Plextor 12/10/32 drive. When I attempted to burn the first CD with it, it did some analysis of my system and told me that the write speed had to be dropped significantly because my CD (read-only) drive wouldn't allow audio to be pulled off fast enought and/or the drive speed in general was too slow.

Hmmmm.....didn't think about those things when I ordered the burner!!! My other drive is a Mitsumi but I'm not sure of its speed. It's probably about two years old so I'm sure it's not that fast at all.

My question for you.....what recommendation would you make for a new CD drive? I want to get something that is very compatible with the Plextor. Before I just go out and buy a fast CD drive, I'd like to get some recommendations, especially from other Plextor owners.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Sounds like you need a cdrom with good DAE (digital audio extraction) speed. You could always rip to the hard drive first using your plextor and then burn from your hard drive. Otherwise, you should check out cdspeed2000 and look at their DAE speed database.

As is mentioned, get another Plextor (the 40MAX is probably the best CD-ROM on the market) to pair with your current drive. The other option, if you are working on the cheap and only need DAE performance, is to look at Afreey drives. From what I remember, their 45x drive (which I have used, and it was a decent drive) was the fastest DAE drive awhile back, and I believe their 52x is also a similarly speedy performer.

Just glanced at that first link, which I remember looking at awhile ago, and it looks like I was right (amazingly enough). The Afreeys are still rated very highly though the Kenwood 72x is amazing -- I'd never buy one though after the problems with earlier models that so many people reported. It's interesting that SCSI is very underrepresented on the Top 10 lists.

My first thought was to buy another Plextor drive. But I'm looking for another IDE drive, I didn't want to go SCSI.

I'm not planning on ripping that many audio CDs. I'll mostly use the writer to burn copies of software CDs. Ummm....only authorized backups, of course!!! :)

I looked at the CloneCD site and their recommendations. They suggested a Toshiba 6702B drive. Anyone have any comments/knowledge of it????

Thanks again!
