Anyone know anything about this drive? Considering grabbing it with Newegg's 10% discount on SSDs. Seems to be pretty fast, and it uses the same Marvell controller on the Intel 510s and some of the OCZ drives. Seems like a decent option while I wait for Sandforce to mature and the price of those drives to come down before I grab a larger drive in a few months.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Yeah that review is what got me interested. And there are some posts on these forums from a couple months back that mention it, but there don't seem to be any comments from owners. Newegg reviews are good, but they're not exactly representative. If anyone owns it and cares to comment, would appreciate it. Otherwise I'll end up with the Plextor of a c300.

The review did mention that the access times can get abnormally high.

Why not go with a 120GB Intel 320 or 510? The 120GB Intel 320 is only $234 on Newegg as opposed to almost $280 for this Plextor.

The 320 is 270read/130write, and its Sata II.
The Plextor is 420read/210write, and its Sata III.

If anything, I'd get the Crucial c300 @ $254, as it's 355read, and also Sata III. But it's had some widely reported stuttering problems (I've seen the fixes available for that issue, so it's not a deal breaker).

Back in the day Plextor made some very high quality optical drives and scsi hard disks. I guess I'm hoping they're making a comeback?

Is that really a difference you would notice in real world use, outside of benchmarks? Besides, those #s are for sequential read/write, which you won't do much of on an SSD anyway.

This image from Anandtech's Intel 510 review does not instill much confidence in me regarding the long-term reliability of non-Intel SSDs. If you really want the Plextor I'd wait a while to see how it fares in terms of reliability.

From AT:
I should add that the numbers Marc published were accurate (confirmed by some of the manufacturers involved), although they don’t paint the complete picture of world wide failure rates - they are an important sample to look at.

Agreed. Except that the 510 series is using a Marvell controller, not an Intel controller like the x25m series and the 320 series, so reliability remains to be seen even for the new Intels. Uncertainty is what we get for being a community of early adopters. But certainty is boring!
