$90 for a BenQ 1640 based drive??
How can this be hot unless you are desperate for a BenQ 1640 drive which is pretty much sold out by most vendors. If this is the case then I dont blame you because it is a good drive, one of the best drives out there.

Edited:
I checked Newegg website and they have the 716 slot loading for $90, is that what you meant??
Then it is a decent drive if you are willing to go through the rebate hassels

The Benq/Phillips derived Plextor drive IS NOT a slot-loader. I'll have to go back and read one of the slot-loader reviews to see what chipset Plextor used. But then. when you make the only true slot-loading, DVD burner on the market, you can pretty much charge whatever the traffic will bear. And if you've seen how much some of the old Pioneer slot-load DVD ROM drives have sold for recently, the traffic will bear quite a bit...

Sorry to thread-crap, but be wary if you use Taiyo Yuden 16x dvd-r. Even though it's listed on the recommended media page, my regular 740A makes grinding/sawing noises when trying to read TY media.
Eventually, it goes away after 20-30 seconds. Plextor finally agreed to send me a replacement, but I'm wondering if I should have stuck with NEC.

As an aside, what's with the recent vogue in slot loaders recently? It's been years since I used them but I absolutely hated the mechanism then and I can't imagine they've changed much.

That's crazy talk. I absolutely adored my slot loader. I'm really hoping they come down in price.

I was correct. The slot-loading Plextor uses the Sanyo base (same as the 716A) and supports the same features as the 716A: Intelligent Recording, VariREC, PowerREC, AutoStrategy, Intelligent Tilt, GigaREC, Silent Mode, etc. The Phillips/Benq based PX-740A is entirely different with almost none of the above features.
