I don't understand what you mean by your comment?... Do you mean that their is a likelyhood that you won't get it at the sale price? I heard Tiger direct is a really bad company to deal with.

He means there is a very real chance that you will not get the rebate. Tiger Direct has a VERY bad reputation when it cames to rebates.....

Actually, it turns out the rebate is not through Tiger Direct. Newegg has this drive for $99.99, free shipping, with the same rebate -- their rebate link goes to the same rebate form.

Oh.!

Newegg Gives you a 5 pack of DVD's free with your order... Hmmm

Which do you guys think is better Newegg or Tiger Direct?

And is this drive better than the NEC 3500 that everyone is talking about?

I need something reliable to archive my Anime collection and will work with a good range of media.

plextor is the best... ever...

The PX-712A is a single layer, 12X burner - the NEC is a dual-layer 16X burner - IOW, not really comparable. Considering that dual layer media is not widely available and still high-priced, and that the NEC is only sold OEM (so you have to come up with burning software separately), the 712A might still be appealing, as it is a retail package with Roxio software. The real key is that the 712A has features and software tools (Plex Tools) unavailable with any other brand.
. OTOH, as soon as they get the bugs worked out, the PX-716A will be out (the first batches, apparently only available from Best Buy, are buggy) in quantity. It will fully compare to the other DL 16x burners out there - and trump them with the added features and software tools. About the only drawback is the lack of Book Type bit setting capability. But I'm fairly sure some firmware hacker will solve that problem shortly.
. I would hate recommending anyone buy anything from Tiger Direct, but you do save a few bucks (5 or 6 bucks after you include shipping and the value of the 5 free disks) over Newegg.
. All the Plextor rebates are direct via Plextor (Niagara Falls, NY clearing house) - so no TigerDirect worries there.
. IAC, I bought my 712a from Newegg at the end of last month and am very happy with it and Newegg's service. And you can get both colors from both places at the same price, which is unusual in itself (black is almost always a bit more expensive for some reason).

.b.h.

I love plextor, I have their scsi wide 40x reader and the 12/32/10 burner....however, the pioneer DVR-108 at $70 was a much better deal. I also went with a Pioneer DVD-306S for my DVD reading.

I will upgrade to a 40x SCSI burner by Plextor soon though.
