Plextor Premium 52x32x52 CDRW

Well, I have one of these sitting on my desk with a note that says "please test this ASAP".

One feature that really has my attention is gigarec, the ability to burn 1GB to a standard 700MB disc! :Q

I'll have to take this for a spin...

(getting crash helmet out of five drawer HON filing cabinet!)

Thats possible? Interesting... let us know results ASAP! I've never heard of such a feature!

There will be other drives out( may be they are out) using sanyo HD-burn technology which will double the capacity of normal CDs.
here

What I've observed with this drive so far:

It's relatively quiet, even in 52X read mode.

GigaREC is limited to 4X write speed. It requires Plex Tools Pro (included) to run.

Ditto for SecurREC. Very nice feature to password protect a disc.

Big letdown is Plex Tools Pro will NOT recognise the drive when connected via 1394 bus. It MUST be connected to the mainboard's IDE controller. BOO!

I was able to write successfully to some old cheesy 12X compusa media that I had left over from 2000! However, reading from the discs (even the Plextor) was difficult so quality is questionable. Of course we're really pushing the limits here. PoweREC indicated max safe speed to burn to that disc was only 24X. (which is DOUBLE what they were "certified" for!)

Further testing will be needed when I can find a machine with IDE ports.

1GB on a disc? Bleh!

With DVD-RW or DVD+RW drives running for $129 after rebate, Plextor is a day late and a dollar short.

The days of "Plextor Being God" have long been over for me.

That's a totally invalid comparison.

DVD-R media is much more expensive than CD-R media.

DVD-R media cannot be played back in a car CD player.

IF you only have 1GB to write, you would be wasting a lot of space on a DVD-R disc!

I could go on and on.

I wouldn't want to use a $129.00 DVD-R drive, that's for sure! (No Lite On Junk here!)

(1) Granted, it's much more expensive but it's also much more versatile
(2) A 1GB CDR isn't going to be playable in a CD player either AFAIK...it's proprietary technology
(3) I wouldn't call it wasting space...I'd call it more room for expansion😉 I'd rather have one DVD to keep writing to over and over than have 4 CD's laying around.
(4) The $129 4x DVD-RW and DVD+RW drives are from Pioneer and NEC respectively.

You must also realize that people have gotten use to using 700MB CDs for a LONG time now. People have grown accustomed to fitting that much into a CD. If they need more they, go the DVD route. I'd rather have a CD-RW drive that read/writes all CD media and spits out media that is readable on all computers than to get a Plextor that uses Proprietary writing technology

I just got my current 52x24x52 CD-RW for free after rebate (was a 48x24x48...did a quick firmware update and 52x here I am) from Office Max. Works just great and is fast as hell. Paying out the a$$ for similar technology ain't my thing.

buffer is 8mb. I might pick this baby up. I need to replace my dead "JustLink" drive with something that can burn stuff (I have a 52x reader in there now. But I also have a DVD burner that will burn decently fast CDs)

They have the Plextor 52x32x52x drive now for $110 at Newegg and it has an 8meg buffer.
It sounds great, but if the discs don't play on most cd players, then all it would really be good
for would be storing info on the computer cause I doubt that a car cd player would accept them very well.
Time will tell though.

Hehe Come on people! Buy these drives and let me know how they work and what the limitations are!

There is a review on either cdrinfo or cdrlabs . I think I recall that the 1G disks will only read on the Plex - intended for backup more than other uses.

So the question:

To read the 1 Gig of Info on a 700meg disc do you need the plextor drive or no? Can let say, me 16x Liteon DVD do the trick?

Probably not - it's likely to be sort-of compatible with existing drives - rather like 99 minute discs.

I suspect that this feature works by spinning the disc more slowly than normal (basically like Long Play on a VCR), so the data is packed more tightly.

MaximumPC loved the drive...I just cant bring myself to upgrade my CD-RW w/ the little burning I do.

I don't understand... but how would it do it? Would it use more accurate lasers and write files closer to each other or does it use special discs?

I get warnings about Multi-Session DVD-R's all the time in Nero, saying "only XP compatible"....?!
