Plextor m8pe challenger to 960 evo?

Glad to see they addressed the toolbox utilities... I used Plextool with my M5Pro and it was next to worthless.

It all comes down to the price once the initial dust settles.

I am going to get either a 960 EVO, M8Pe(G), or the MyDigitalSSD BPX.

Right now the Plextor 512 GB is overpriced at $279, and out of stock at Newegg. Additionally, the 960 EVO will likely be in high demand when it finally launches and sell over MSRP as well. The 480 GB MyDigitalSSD is available at Amazon for $200, which is still over MSRP of $180, and I personally believe it needs to be a little cheaper than MSRP because its performance doesn't match the other two drives and the brand name isn't as well known.

Any of those would work for me, so I guess I will either watch for a sale, or let the market settle. Hopefully by late spring I can pick one of them up.

Just don't go for the 250gb evo, its performance is lacking compared to the 1tb version. Reviews of the 500gb are still mia. Tom seems to have the best ssd reviews.

Ah thanks, it seems that reviewers should start reviewing all sizes of ssd's because their performance obviously varies. Someone reads the 1tb evo 960 review and then buys the 250gb and will wonders why its slow.

This is always the case because the larger SSD's have more NAND.

I've got other plans. For those other plans, I was leaning toward an expensive 1TB unit. Now -- not so sure.

If the shortfall in performance of a 250 EVO still shows seq read and write specs four times better than an SATA SSD -- it just may serve my purpose.

Point being -- the usual advice so far is that consumer-enthusiasts wouldn't notice the difference for the investment, unless they used applications and data that really benefit. Under a varied use scenario, I may do my "other plans" with a much smaller investment. Later, prices will moderate on the 1TB options.

In reference to the Plextor, it was either Plextor or Samsung that published bench results showing that an M.2 NVMe with a heat-spreader (either the Plextor glitz or the Sammy copper "label") will perform much better.

On the last page of that Techspot review biostud linked to, it does say this:

The 250GB 960 Evo is said to deliver similar performance to the 500GB unit we reviewed although there are some conflicting reports about that online, so we'll have to test that later until we can recommend the otherwise attractive priced $130 drive.

It will be interesting if it comparable, because for the most part larger drives are faster in most uses.
