Plextor drive won't read CDs?

My friend has a Plextor Plexwriter 8/4/32A in his system. It's connected to an IDE chain which is also connected to a Pioneed 8x dvd rom drive. My problem is that he can burn fine, but when he tries to insert ANY CDs into the plextor drive, the computer doesn't recognize them. It just says "Please insert a Disc into Drive E". He is running Win2k Professional SP 1 and has just started noticing this problem in the past two weeks. The only forseeable problem I could understand is that he changed to Nero 5.5 but what then? Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

maybe it's the media he's using? This happened to me twice. THe first time a good reformat fixed the problem, but the other time it was the beginning of my burner dying.

Sounds weird, all i can say is, i had and still have plextor same drive for 4 years , plexwriter px412 scsi, and it still burns perf! i'ts working at a recording studio, so it's burns approx 2-3 cd's everyday and has been doing for the last 4 years... but faulty hardware is out there...
