Plextor 716A Burning problems

I have a Plextor 716A which I've owned for about a few years now. It's been burning fine up until now.

I am able to completely burn a disc using Nero but playing the disc in a player as the tracks go up I am getting a static and clipping sound within the track.

I have tried the obvious, upgrading the firmware and lens cleaner but nothing has worked.

I use the drive for burning every once in awhile and the CD-ROM for installing software frequently.

Is it time for a new drive or is there something I am missing?

I'd open the drive up and do a really thorough cleaning. If that doesn't work then it's time for a new burner.
