Plextor 708A DVD+RW Burner

I just put this burner into a new build and so far it reads very few CDs and other media, and I can't figure out why. Music CDs (yes, original copies) dont seem to be read at all, yet I can read most commercial DVDs fine. All CD-RW and CD-R's I've tried thus far simply aren't seen by the Plextor. I installed Half Life 2 from the CD's with no problems at all. I was having this problem before, so I updated to the latest firmware and the problem has not gone away. I'm thinking maybe a problem with the lens? if so or if not, anyone have any ideas? Thanks everyone 🙂

Check to see if dma is enabled for the plextor.
Install the latest aspi layer just for the fun of it.
Delete and remove all references in registry to all burning programs except Plextools.
If you are using intel, remove intel's application accelerator if installed.

Plextor's waranty is pretty good. Call the toll free support no. You might get a replacement.

Did you flash the firmware to the latest version? Even before I did that, I didn't have any problems with my 708A (I've got two) reading any and all CD/DVD media.

Good luck.

weird. I have the same problem with the 716SA sata drive. It can't read many of my CDs and I have the latest firmware. the discs are like brand new and have no scratches. I thought Plextor drives were good.

I have a Plextor 708UF2 - does everything I ask it to. Maybe it has new firmware - I don't know. I bought it last November. The other difference is that it is Firewire/USB 2 external - almost as good as SCSI for reliability.

I have had many burners since 1993 - but all have been external. I find them more reliable with much less CPU impact.

There is an updated firmware for 716SA/A get it via cdfreaks (it's 1.04u I think).

OP,
. Install or update your ASPI layer software (DL from Adaptec.com), install latest firmware and latest chipset drivers for your mobo. In this order: chipset drivers, aspi layer, firmware - reboot after each install. Check cdfreaks plextor thread for more tips.

How do you remove the aspi layer? I think its giving me some feedback to my speakers. It does not show up on the control panel add/remove programs.

Which ASPI software did you install, Adaptec's or Nero's. For Adaptec you could try to run the ASPI installer again and see if it gives you an uninstall option. I think it is basically just four files. You could just delete them and remove all reference to them from the Registry. But I would check any text files in the Adaptec directory on your C: drive to see if that offers any help and/or send an email to Adaptec directly. I've never heard of ASPI causing any problems unless perhaps you have more than one installed.

I think I may have installed it more than once. Speakers are fine now. If it causes me anymore problems Ill just use Norton Ghost and ghost back. Adaptec does not give an uninstall option. And you are right it appears to be a couple of .dll files.
