Finally BB has similar prices to online stores. After taxes it comes out to be about the same price.

You should be aware that the performance increase is virtually negligible between a 40x and something around a 24x. To quote plextor's site, the 40x is capable of "40X speed, the new drive is capable of burning a CD in just over three minutes." This doesn't make any sense as my 12x burner is able to burn discs in approximately 7 minutes, but the difference between 3 minutes and 7 minutes is basically 60% or so. The real fact is 40x is a MARKETING gimmick, the MAXIMUM speed at which the burner can write, most often in the lead in/out areas of the disc. When actual data is being written to the disc, you are running at a slower speed...

Edit: Someone else probably knows more about this than I do.

well.. it's burning at 40x at the outer edge.

speed goes up from

20x 24x 32x and to 40x (not sure exact speed)

so yes it's burnin at 40x, but not from the beginning.. that's why time doesn't match if you compare your 12x to 40x

so even tho if there wil be 100x CDRW, you wont' burn the whole cd in 1 sec

It's a nice drive and there are some reviews on it out there. i have one and it has a limit of burning music @ 24X (unlike the louder 40X Lite-On that does) plus it has a 4MB buffer which comes in handy...most of my better CDR's handle the 40X speed BTA the problem is finding reasonable priced 40X certified media.

Thank you for the Knowledge MAD COW. Eveyone like's too shoot the 40 speed down, and the 32x and the 24. Yes we know it writes in zones. But guess what. I paid $260 for my 12x plextor when it came out. THis is a hot deal!!!!

It's the plextor name and quality your buying and it's worth it. It's quiet. Had a lite one 32x and it was loud, same as my 24x lite on. I dont want to wait 7 minutes any more.

Does your 12x also write 12 RW's at 12x no 4X How long do you have to wait at 4x for a RW??? Nuff said.

Did anyone buy one yet?

Does a 40x Plex do SD2 yet?

I have a 24x and a 12x Plex, not really going to upgrade.

But that is a great price on the best name in drives...

I bought this drive because of the name and speed but I wasn't impressed at all.

1. Doesn't create audio CD at more than 24x. (I don't think they even stated that on the box)
2. It is REALLY LOUD when playing Audio CDs.
3. It doesn't copy new SD2.
4. It should include an audio cable (at least for the price)
5. WHY would u include Easy CD Creator with the supposedly "best" drive out there???? why??? and it's not the full version either!

And Actually i don't think there was one software that was a full version. All limited version of the software. Plextor Manager 2000 doesn't even work with XP! How can u release ur best drive with software that doesn't work with the latest operating system?

thats why i exchanged the drive for the TDK 32x and it is awesome. It's actually a liteon which can copy the new SD2(according to other people, haven't tried it myself). It is really QUIET. The drive performs as it should be and has no problems creating audio CDs at 32x. Also it includes Nero 5.5 and couple other software which are very good compared to plextor's software package plus a cd marker. No audio cable in this one either ( i was surprised since the 24x did have it).

I paid 150 for plextor and ~75 for TDK cuz of 149.99 - (50 MIR + discount). I can live with 32x and sacrifice couple seconds for that much money & features the TDK has.

I'm not saying Plextor is bad company but my 40x drive definitely won't be a plextor.

Well I went to BB 2 days ago, and got this drive. It was listed at 179.99

The box was all crushed but nothing was wrong. So i told them and they took the price down to 159. I LOVE THIS DRIVE AND WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE PRIE FOR A B&M Store.

I can burn a CD in 2 mins too :p

FYI, i bought my 40x awhile back at one of my local comp store for 179. This drive has burn everything I wanted. The only downside of having this drive is that there are no media that can burn at 40x. I buy those cheap cds at Frys for 14.xx and they are capable of burning at 32x so I burned all my stuff at 32x no problem including audio cds. So for hma81, i don't know what is wrong with ur drive but mine is really quiet.

I was wondering what CDR media yall use to burn your disks. I was also wondering how long it takes to burn. I use the FUJU 24x and it takes like 5 min and 30 secs. So I know something is wrong. TDK media takes 4 min. What media should I use for 40x?

So given all this info you guys are throwing out.
I have a 4X burner and I want to buy 2 new ones.
I have my eye on the TDK 32X and the LiteOn 32X
should I go TDK and Liteon? I don't know much about SD2
but what I gathered from you guys is that only Liteon does SD2 whatever SD2 is.
and the TDK one I have used before and I love it.
