Plextor 40/12/40a going nuts!

Well guys, I am kind of worried that my good ol' Plextor has taken a figurative crap on me. I went to burn a cd the other day, and the drive did not recognize the blank cd. In fact, it won't recognize any cd. You can put in whatever you want, and it will simply flash the light on the front for a second or two, and stop. You look at the drive and it acts as if nothing has been inserted - so it's clearly not reading the discs.

I reinstalled the driver 40x and it didn't fix anything. I updated the firmware - still no fix.

Anyone ever have a problem like this before? What should I look for? It has worked beautifully for me for a long time now - and suddenly it just went out. I did not make any hardware changes or even software changes that could be to blame.

Any advice?

This my friend, is the definition of "breaking". There is a simple test to see if your drive is dead or not. First, reseat the cable, make sure the connection is good and firm. I personally don't think it is worth the time, but some people do. Next, either try to boot to a cd or read a cd in dos using a boot disc. If it fails either of those tests, it is dead. Nothing you can do but RMA the drive.

Crap. What is the current "hot" cd burner out there? When I bought this Plextor was being hailed like a holy grail...

It's definetly a good burner. Did you test it out? As for what's hot, beats me. I like my $30 samsung. Although I really like the new asus quitrack drives. Guess it just depends on what you are looking to do with it.
