It's OEM... I'm not sure what to make of that, since all you get in the retail package is the drive and software (which is what you get here). I guess they might not give you mounting screws or something.

Anyway, I bought this from Buy.com for about $250 (I just couldn't wait), so $210 with free shipping is a great deal. It is, as the reviews say, amazing. Super fast, very quiet.

(Wonder how soon til someone asks, "Is this a rebadged Plextor?")

Actually I see they have the retail version for $230 including shipping, which makes it about the lowest price anywhere with shipping.

The product descriptions for both appear to be exactly the same.

They don't do this drive in SCSI yet do they? My 4X Yammie has been throwing little hissy fits lately.

I usually get oem drives since the retail box doesn't really have anything worth me paying the extra cash for. They include software I never use, manuals I never read and a few blank cd's.
I think if you know what you're doing, oem is cool.

Generally the warranty for an OEM drive is less than for a retail drive! Also if there are any rebates offered, they are generally always for retail, not OEM.

Wonder if it's true that Plextor downgraded their firmware to you can't burn outside of "safe disk 2" for copyrighted media?

Just yesterday I posted about whether to get the 12X or 16X Plextor. Now the 16X is available for only $10 more as OEM box. Not being familiar with the difference between retail and OEM boxes, I called newegg.com to ask (they've got the deal). I was told the retail box contains a "bunch" (he reiterated this when I questioned bunch vs 1) of media that the OEM box does not. Software is included in OEM box and all else is the same.

Not trusting CSRs too much, I called Plextor, and after waiting 30 min, learned that the OEM box has no software; it's just the drive. More plausible story. Anyone know any different?
Cheers

As for rebates: None are available for this drive, so that's not an issue.
As for warranty: It's not a hard and fast fact that OEM drives have shorter warranties than retail versions, and the point is we really don't know here. Plextor has a reputation for taking care of its customers. I have a hard time believing that if this drive dies on you, they won't help you out.

As for the included media: The retail box includes one CDR and one CDRW (not even plextor's house brand, ironically. Can't remember, but I think they're verbatim). As for the software: It includes EZ CD Creator and DirectCD (the latter for CDRW writing), as well as something called Plextor Manager which includes a media player, audio ripper and a couple other utilities.

Plextor manager can be downloaded from plextor's web site. As for EZ CD Creator: I like it, but lots of people hate it anyway. There are free programs you can download to tide you over, or you can go buy something like Nero.

The drive doesn't require any drivers for use, so the only "software" they're giving you is software for burning CD's.

Also: Since NewEgg clearly states "with software," I'd bet they're throwing something in. They could have a bunch of oem versions of EZ Cd Creator (since just about every CDR drive comes with it these days), and they could be including those.

I think they've increased the price to $220

OEM $220
Retail $230

One more thing about retail version. It usually comes with IDE cable, audio cable and screws. But I'm not sure about this drive though.
Maybe MontyBurns can confirm this.

The retail version does indeed come with an IDE cable and screws. It doesn't come with a sound cable -- you'll either have to plug your existing cable (no doubt running from your CD-Rom) into it, or get another one with a splitter. The drive also supports digital in from your sound card, but again, you have to buy a sep. cable for that.

At this point, with them walking the price up, I'd say you're better off just getting the retail version. $230 shipped is still the lowest price anywhere.

And did I mention: This drive rocks. :)

You know, I'd say it's pretty likely those guys are reading this thread...

Right after we start discussing whether the OEM comes with software and what it is, they change the description to "with software" to "includes Adaptec software." (Which I assume they mean Adaptec's EZ CD Creator and DirectCD.)

Could also account for the price increase...

it's $240.32 shipped for CA this is the oem at newegg.
add 6.00 bucks for retail box.
as cheap as anything on pricew4tch.c0m.
You also might get decent service from this co.

Why don't you guys just pricematch the retail drive with staples? Ingram Micro carries this burner. And if I'm not mistaken there are a few $30 off $200 coupons left isn't there? Now that would make this deal pretty warm>>hot, a 16x for around the cost of a 12x.

Staples doesn't carry this drive. (Or at least didn't yesterday, I haven't checked today.)

Staples does use Ingram Micro as a distributor, yes, but does not offer every Ingram Micro product for sale.

If and when they do carry it, I expect their price will be closer to $300. They'd have to come down to buy.com's level for hte coupon to match this deal, and I don't see that happening anytime soon.
