The 50$ rebate shows up, as does the deal with the free DVDs, but that leaves the price at 69.95$. Am I missing the 30$ rebate somewhere?

**edit** Might help if I was looking at the correct drive, no? Found the missing rebate, thanks 😉

The (Best Buy) Plextor 716's I had gave some of the worst error charts I've ever seen

Since the new Plextor FW 1.02 is out today, I wouldn't accept any Plextor 16X that didn't have a TLA# of 0202 or higher, which you have no control over with an online purchase.

Thank you Bozo, I think you just saved me a headache. What about those NEC dual layer writers? Any good?

Well I hear good things about NEC ones here all the time but my 8X DL was crap compared to my Pioneer.

I've never had any issues with Lite-On drives so I just bought a 16X DL burner from Newegg (Lite-On)... seems reasonable to me considering my 16X CD burner from Lite-On is still going strong after like 5 years...

i had the plextot 8x dvd writer. tons of problems. always had problems reading/burning. the time would say like 2 hours or it would fail and sit there. never had a problem with my 4x liteon. in fact in ran 3 times faster then the plextor, plextor used to be the best but now they are junk. too bad. back to the drawing board. and they still charge the most like they think they are the best. they should get a clue and fix their crap.

I'm using a NEC ND-3500A. It's a great drive. I've never had a problem with it, it's very quiet, and with a firmware update it reliably burns Ritek G04's at 12X. Very very nice drive especially for the price.

Mike

I got my Liteon 411 last year at BF sale. Converted to 8X and it burns some 4x media at 8x. I haven't been compelled to upgrade because of media prices. It has been a great drive though.

What happens if PC/Mac Connection doesn't make its ETA for the PX-716A? What if they don't get it until after 12/31? What will you do with your rebates then?

The Lite-On 16x has iissues, I use mine just as an error reader for the discs I burn on my NEC3500. If you're buying a 16x burner, you either go NEC or BenQ. BenQ has faster burns for +R, NEC is faster for -R, and NEC is more of a finished product, as long as you use the hacked firmware.

<rant>So you have a problem with a single unit of a product and not only is that product crap, but all products made by Plextor are crap! I too have a Plextor 8X and have never had a single problem with it. So by your logic I would think they are the best. I just hate it when people complain about the one item they bought. If it was such a POS, why didn't you RMA it? </rant>

Yeah really. Hey everyone, I watched this one DVD movie and it sucked. So let me tell you, all DVD movies suck! Don't watch them!

Plextor used to have very high quality...but i dont know what has happened to them recently.
i've read quite a few bad things about this drive.

Nope, no problems with the DVD burner either I am happy to report 🙂

Seriously guys, if you update firmware usually most retail drives will work fine... then again there are the occasional bad apples, but I've been lucky so far in computer hardware...

sorry, i can't seem to find the $30 rebate anywhere?? i see the $50 mailin and the free 50 pack of dvd's but no $30?? i am looking at the NEC drive but i assume since the $50 rebate is for the plextor, sony and NEC that the NEC would have the $30 as well?

also, that limit one rebate per customer/household/offer always makes me nervous - if we send in both rebate forms, one for the $50 off and one for the free fuji 50pack after $40 mail in do they both go through?

I can't say I'm too happy with Plextor or their total lack of customer service. The cd laser went south on my 708A about 5 days after the warranty expired. I've been trying to contact Plextor for over two weeks and can't reach them. Seems the only phone number they have is for tech support (toll free), I've dissconnected 3 times while waiting in q for support. so much for free support. I get no replies to emails.

Pretty hard to have somthing positive to say about Plextor under these conditions.

The concensus I've read is in line with what slug said. Plextor simply isn't the same as it was back in the day....yet their prices would have you think they are.

PC Connection is famous for offering great deals for product not in stock. The Plextor drive is on major back order and he rebates are worthless by the time you get the drive according tothere sales rep.
