I have both of these CDRWs. I need to keep one and put the other in a machine I am building for a friend. Which one shouild I keep for myself???

Not sure what the firmware revisions are...does that matter with these particular drive's abilities to copy SD2??? I heard that all the Lite-On 24x10x40 CDRWs copy SD2.

I've in the same situation, but I've got a TDK 24x in the mix too. I swapped the Plex 16x for the Lite On 24x for my machine, but trying to decide whether to put the Plex 16x or the TDK 24x in the friend's machine, and sell the one I don't use. The TDK is in a sealed box. Someone said they heard the TDK 24x doesn't do SD2 either, but who knows.

Someone also said the Lite On is a little picky about media, but I think it usually gets very good reviews.

So if I were you, I'd probably keep the Lite On.

Back in October I was shopping for the a burner and people recommended the Plextor and the LiteOn off a post I put on Anandtech. Well I got probably 25 replies to my post and to my surprise it was a tossup. So I bought the LiteOn which was a 16x10x40x and was close to 60 cheaper than the Plextor and I have been very happy with this unit. It is very quiet, burns fast, has burnproof, and came with the best burning program around, Nero. All the replies I had got on the LiteOn had said just what I stated and found out it was true. The Plextor is more expensive, but I have used a friends Plex that is the same is my LiteOn speed and I will just say I am happy with my LiteOn. But either one is a good unit and I have been very happy and problem free with mine.

I agree with the above...the difference is probably so neglible that the liteon and its great price will give you the best value...

Liteon since its 12x early last year has shown they are making a great drive...I hear very few post about liteon drives failing...

Lets kill this plextor fanboy site thing once and for all...and the myths that many (and I mean many) here are so stupid to believe...

"if it cost more it must be better"...Does intel to amd come to mind on this one???

"if it is cheaper it most be crap"

Those are myths in my eyes too. A while back I recommended a plex 12x for my friend, he is happy, I got my other friend a 16x lite-on and he is happy too.
Both are good. How much do you feel comfortable (or not stupid) spending?

Even if the drive's hardware doesn't support SD2 copying, you can still do a software workaround by downloading a small program called BetaBlocker. Just create an image with CloneCD, drop the image into BetaBlocker, and it will scan and patch the right sectors. It only takes a few seconds, and then you just burn the patched image.

Check out this website for very comprehensive reviews of all the major burners: CD Freaks

That should tell you what you want to know about SD2, and may help make your decision about which burner you want.

You don't even need to do that. Daemon-Tools, the most perfect virtual CD-ROM emulator is capable of notonly running "perfect images" w/ subchannel etc, but it breaks protection for imperfect images. ie, just do a regular disc-to-disc copy on a drive that doesn't support SD2, and use it. As long as Daemon-Tools is running (Even if it's not currently running the virtual CD-ROM), it works. I've started ripping CDs on my friend's Plextor and just dragging the "perfect" images to the CD as files for use with Daemon-Tools just to ensure compatability for everyone I copy it for in my drive. D-Ts is great...

I'd keep the Plex, no questions asked. no point in keeping a cheap budget burner which is barely even faster over a Plexwriter...

The Lite-On feels cheap. It works great, but it seems flimsy.

Don't get me wrong, it works great. My parents machine has the Lite-On 24x and mine has the Plex 16x. I am happy with my plextor. Not one coaster ever.

It is personal preferance. I think you get a more durable product going with plextor, but if your careful with your equipment, then that shouldn't be a factor.

My Lite-On is great, and I don't know what you mean by "flimsy". Mine isn't anywhere close to being flimsy. Anyways, yeah, I'd keep the faster lite-on. If it were a 24x plextor and 24x lite-on, I'd so go with Plex. If you were buying them new I'd say go for lite-on... see where this is going?

< cheap budget burner >

this is the kind of ignorant statement I mean...Why is it budget??? Cause they don't charge the high price like plextor??? The statement has obvious tones of it is cheaper therefore it is not of the same quality...

I think ricoh/ open make a great product, once again cheaper then plextor (like who isn't) and just as great in performance and quality..read the reviews...

Edit:
Yield, You'd think somebody who has a car like that would know about a little thing like bang for the buck...

Looks like I touched on a hot subject. I guess it's a toss up. I am very happy with my existing 16x Plextor. But before I write off the 24x Lite-On, I will probably install it and use it for a couple of days, and then make my decision. Tx for the feedback!

I got a 24x LiteOn for Christmas and I love it. Fast and quiet. Highly recommend it and you can't beat it for the price.

Buy the Lite-On Plextor is way over rated. My friend has a Plextor 16X and I have a Lite-On 16X. I have had no problems with the Lite-On. The only difference is you save some money.

LiteOn all the way! I love my burner... (I have a few gripes about it but oh well) 24x kicks ass :)

And yeah, LiteOn may be cheaper, but only price wise, quality wise it's proving it ranks right up there with plextors.

Well, I just replaced my 16x Plex with the 24x Lite-On. Seems to be working fine, but it is recognized as a DVD/CD-ROM drive in WinXP's control panel. The transfer mode for the drive also defaults to Multi-word DMA Mode 2. Is this normal?

The SD2 issue is pretty much null now with the advent of the feature "Amplify Weak Sectors" which is available in CloneCD (when regional settings are other than US/Japan/UK/etc.), BlindWrite, and others.

But I would still go with the Lite-On :)

Yep, that is all normal. Open up Windows Explorer, and the drive should be labelled as a "CD-RW" drive. Multi-word DMA is sufficient for CD burners. Have fun

How many people that are reccomending one have tried both? I'm sure not that many.

I myself have a plextor, and as I have stated earlier my parents just got a lite on which I installed for them.

The Lite-On feels cheaper. Trust me on this one, the tray seems less sturdy and when it ejects it just sounds cheap. As stated above, if you take care of your stuff, you are going to have no problems.

If I accidently brushed my elbow on the tray when it was ejected, I'd say the Plextor has about a 500% chance of surviving the brush over the lite-on.

It is not always true, but when you pay more for something, you "NORMALLY" get more. However, this is not always true.

It is my opinion that the Lite On drives are good and are very good for people needing fast speeds on a budget. If you have the money to spend or are faced with the choice between a lite-on or a plextor, I'd take plextor.

Edit: I should also say that a brush of the elbow isn't gonna break the lite-on tray, it was just an expression. Let's say you smacked it pretty hard with your elbow. :)

I have both, and my preference is the Lite-On 24102B. The Lite-On reads and copies disks that choke my Plextor 161040A, and of course, it is faster. Quality of construction seems to be good on both. I have the Lite-ON in my main rig and the Plextor in my daughters' PC.

Life is gooood;)

I haven't played with the Lite-On long enough to say which one I prefer, but I would agree that the quality of construction on both seems to be good. Plextor may seem a tad sturdier, but I definitely would not say that the Lite-On feels or sounds cheaply made.

why is everyone stuck on the LiteOn-Plextor debate (heck, it has historically been xxxx-Plextor debate). what about Lite-On as compared to TDK?

with the recent deals on TDK 24x and the popularity of Lite-On 24x, anyone out there who can share some of their wisdom from experiences or otherwise?

TDK 24/10/40 drives are either rebadge lite-on or OEM sanyo drives. I bought one and got the liteon one. Look what it says on the box if it says buffer under run protection then it is a liteon. If it states burn proof then it is a sanyo.

I got my TDK for same price as a liteon and in my option looks a bit better, the drive has been great so far. Huge improvement over my old 4 speed CDR.
