Plextor 12/10 or Yamaha 8/8 for just under 2/3s the price?

Noriaki

Lifer
I can get a plextor 12/10/32 for $479
Or I could get a yamaha 8/8/24 for $300

(those are canadian prices, so about $315 and $200 in US)

Which would you guys go for, cuz that yamaha is pretty damn cheap...

I went for the yamaha (haven't got it yet)...I figured the lower cost, the 4mb buffer, the 8X8 write/rewrite speeds were enough for me to get this....with 8X, you can burn a CD in 9mins...with a 12X, its 6 mins....3 mins for almost $200? 🙂 You do the math...

Oh yea, I didn't think BURNproof was worth $200 either....

I agree Relf. 200 bux just so I can multitask and burn aint worth it. Yamaha makes a damn fine drive. I think plextor is overrated. They make a good drive, dont get me wrong, but they are very over priced.

Oh yea, if you want to multitask, get a SCSI drive...my friend has a 4X4X16 SCSI (Yamaha), and he burns while he does his normal work (ie. surfing, homework, etc...nothing intensive)....he doesn't care that its only a 4X writer/rewriter, since he can use his computer while it works...

Oh yea, one more thing...

If you want to get an amazing deal on a Yamaha 8X8X24, go to onvia...they have it for $220ish..use the $50 off coupon, and the price comes to $170ish... (thats CDN dollars) 🙂

umm, here in the US, with coupons, you can get a plextor 12/10/32A for about $210, and a 8x8x32 for about $170. I don't think $40 is overpriced for the plextor, especially considering the faster burn and rw speeds + burnproof.

Mike

Mikewarrior2: In the US, with coupons you can get the Yamaha down to $115....thats about a $100 USD difference between the Yamaha and the Plextor 🙂

Noriaki,

You can get a better price then those. I'm in Ottawa and I know of at least two good shops that sell the plextor for under $450. One is even an online store and you could order from it if you are not in the local area (and can drop by it).

Check out www.dealsdirect.com. They have the plextor at $445 and the Yamaha (full retail) at $289 or whitebox at $259.

I have the Yamaha 8x4x24 SCSI... its an awesome drive, can do anything I want while burning w/o problems... for the money difference I would go with the Yamaha.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll go with the Yamaha.
I've been thinking even with burn proof, my comp would be using to much resources to play games anyways...

Atroz, thanks for the tip, but I have to buy local, don't have a Visa yet.

Edit: Yamaha CRW8824EZ, (8x8x24) is $294.95 full retail box, that's with 2 year warranty through a local store. If I were buying the plextor I'd look into that place, but the yamaha is only like 6 bux cheaper.

Plextors are not overrated, the reason they have a higher price tag is because they use metal gears and mechanics in there burners and basic Cd-roms. How many other companies you know do the samething for a cheaper price?

Noriaki, I ordered a Plextor 12/10 from Onvia Canada yesterday. Total is 433$ shipped (with a 50$ rebate that's good until October 7th). I think the drive even went down a couple of bucks today, after I placed my order...🙁 It's the cheapest could find in Canada, and I think the burn-proof is worth it.

Email me Here if you want the coupon code.
