Plextor 12/10/32a problem, sort of...

I mainly use CDRWin for all of my backups (it's quick, it's easy, it's small). However, it reports that in order to write at 12x my CD reader (Pioneer 10x DVD, roughly a 40x CD reader - I thought) has to be able to read faster than the writer can write. Is the CDRWin wrong in reporting that DVD drive can read at 12x (max)? If not, can anyone suggest a faster IDE CD reader, preferably a DVD drive?

Thanks

D/l cdr-win 3.8c. Works fine for me. Just check the burnproof option and you should be good to go. As for the request to have a reader that is faster than 12x, I'd ignore it. Even if you CD-Rom can't read at 12x (which it can) burnproof is there to take care of that.

But you see, I want to be able to burn at 12x and in order to do that my reader has to report to CDRWin (3.8c) that it can in fact read at a speed higher than the recorder's maximum write speed of 12x...right now it's forcing me to write at 8x.

I just downloaded and ran CDSpeed99 and DVDSpeed99, CD and DVD benchmarking programs, and they both reported that my Pioneer DVD drive reads CDs at a minimum speed of 17x! Maybe I'll upgrade to the newer Pioneer 16x DVD drive.

Well, you can always make a *.bin file first, and the burn off your hard drive.
