I bought the amazon fire stick and it allows the use of Plex, I went to download the app and it's $5 but the one on Google play is $2. Do I need to pay for the app separate for each device?

From what I was reading the amazon version may be outdated and not as well maintained.

For $5 I'll just subscribe to the Plex pass. I think that includes all the apps.

What do you guys think?

Some clients do have a price, and it is per platform but not per device (a Google Play purchase would carry across anything that supports Google Play apps).

Now since Plex Pass is per month (assuming you aren't talking about a lifetime sub) I'm not sure if the free Plex Pass version of the app would stop working if you stop subscribing. I'd wager it would.

Basic Plex server software is free.
Plex Plus (additional features, early access to new features etc) cost money. (recurring or single lifetime subscription)
Plex apps for mobile devices costs a 1 time fee per platform

Can the fire stick sideload or install from Google Play? I'm pretty sure it can't.

It's not a Chromecast, it runs its own software.

I don't have Plex server yet, I would run it if I got the apps. No I don't think the fire stick can side load yet. It does have a developer section but I haven't seen anything for it yet. It's too new I think.

Just checked, and it's $2.31 (?) on Amazon, $1.99 on the Play Store. I only stream from my PC to my Roku via Plex, so I'm not sure why I'd want to have it on a mobile device.

Yeah, that was a special they were running but it's done now. If that's all you'll ever do, certainly you won't need an Android version of the app. But that does open up the possibility for streaming movies/tv/music to your mobile devices, tablets or Android TV/Amazon Fire TV/stick. If you had a chromecast it would also give another option for watching and controlling Plex on a TV without being at the host computer. As you said, none of that is absolutely necessary, but many do find those features useful.
