Plex + apple tv AC3 question

I've been banging my head against the wall and can't figure this out - all mkvs/xvids with dolby digital have been getting downsampled to stereo on my 2nd gen apple tv. The apple tv itself is set to digital out via hdmi and I can't figure out where to look to fix this.
