KB, you will get much better result if you make a small paper CONE &amp; tape that to the back of the nail. You can also make the cone from thin plastic sheet, but paper works OK.

With paper cone, 4 ft of 1/2&quot; or 5/8&quot; copper pipe &amp; human breath, you can get 300fps.

It will stabilize well for a long trajectory &amp; improve velocity.

Not sure how you figure a cone will improve speed. We measured those speeds at 8' from the target, drag has a minimal effect. I agree that the cone would fly better, but it's harder to make and more fragile (remember it's being shot by a propylene explosion). All you need to make these second-gen naildarts is a small length of masking tape and a knife.

Human breath? Keep in mind that this is not a thin little blow dart, it's a big fat three and half inch nail.

You improve gas seal with a cone, which is main reason to use a cone.

Plastic stands up better with repeated shots.

Yep, hair spray, propane, ether ( my choice ), etc work OK.

I liked the rigid copper pipe for barrels better than PCV for darts.

I had a runin when younger about some pigeons &amp; retained darts &amp; stuff. Odd how a 3 1/2&quot; nail would just stick there &amp; the pigeon would still fly quite a distance.

Oh, seal, yea. I use a wad of damp cloth to fire stuff from the guns (except potatos and grapes, that is ), so sealing is not a big deal. And repeated shots? HA! If I'm lucky enough to get the nail out without destroying the fins, I still have to bang it straight with a hammer!

[edit] It says in my Ars post that the nail is a 16d 3.5incher. How would'ya like to get hit with that thing cruising at 150MPH? Mwa ha ha
