No it's not.
This is not a thread about the lens, it's a thread asking people to help talk me out of an impuse buy. BTW, I'm probably going to hold off at least for a day or two to see if the other half of my brain agrees.

You'll hardly ever use the thing.

You don't need another $1K of debt.

You can get 80% of the performance for half the price.

As a person on some show called "Big Spender" said that was spending $7,000 more than he made per month... "the world is full of great deals"

So I say go for it...

I have rooms full of impulse buys in my house. I wish I had half that money back.

How often will you use this? How much will it depreciate and how quickly?

If you buy it now, you are stuck with it, over pay or not... use it or not... depreciate or not. If you wait, the price could go down, you will have the cash available should an emergency arise.

Once you buy it, you own it. If you wait, you still have the option.

Did that work?

Just because something is a mistake for you doesn't mean it's a mistake for others.

I may well be an idiot, but it's not because I spent over $4k on my mountain bike when I was several years older than 25. I spend roughly eight hours a week riding it. I am in much better physical shape because of it. Riding reduces my stress levels, so I'm in much better mental shape. I have a whole bunch of friends I met mountain biking. Best money I ever spent. Thinking of spending more on a longer travel bike.

OP: If you'd get a lot of joy and use out of it, go for it.

I don't see how this makes someone an idiot. If they can afford it while paying all important bills and still be comfortable why not spend it on something fun?

I just paid a good amount of money for my mt bike. Maybe I don't need it, but in the long run it will pay for itself, I hardly ever drive any more. Now I am looking into a road bike to make the commute even easier.

what an idiot

so anything over 1k is a waste of money? you couldnt have sounded more stupid if you tried. you never mentioned anything about those who are 25, though. younger is young and stupid, older is idiots, so 25 must be the sweet spot to buy whatever you want without being an idiot or stupid.

That's the crazy thing with quality lenses. They hold their value like crazy. Assuming you keep them in good shape. If he bought this for $1000 right now in two years he could very likely turn around and sell it for $900.

I bought a lens three years ago for around $600 that to this day I could still almost get every penny back out of.

lol... I don't think I've spent that much total, on all my camera equipment and film and developing over the years.

I couldn't do it.... that's 2 car payments. :)

Get this instead.

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8

You'll be trading the L glass for f/2.8, and the prestige of the big white lens with the red stripe, but the Sigma is an excellent lens with fast and sharp AF. I shoot a lot from a distance in low-light, so the f/2.8 makes much more sense for me, but may not mean as much to you.

Hold off buying it until you have some decent Yanks wins to photograph.

I also agree with montanafan. A sigma lens would work perfectly for you.

Consider the Canon 70-200f2.8L IS? ;)

too heavy (unless you really do need f/2.8, aka you're an event photographer)

I wonder how this compares to the f/4L IS in weight. But the sigma is pretty big too. I just know I wish I had more use for a 70-200.. I had an f/4 non-IS for a few months... oh so nice.

oh, BUY IT! haha.. so much for talking you out of it.
