I have decided to retire my old P3 1.0 and build a new PC. I will use a P4 3.0 and 512 mb of Kingston CAS3 RAM. I now have to decide which motherboard to use. I am a light user. My new PC will be used mostly to surf the internet and for some light Excel and Word work. I just want a very fast and totally reliable machine. I am not into gaming and I do not want to overclock. I expect to use this new PC for the next 3 years at least.

Which motherboard would you recommend? I would like a board with most of the modern bells and whistles like SATA, RAID and Firewire, etc. Nevertheless, stability and reliability are my main priorities.

My local store suggest a P4P800E-Deluxe. Is that a good choice?

The asus board will work fine, but may give you false error messages through it's speech reporter. I recommend my msi 865pe neo2 LS or abit's is-7 for value and features. My msi board is discontinued, but you can still find it online. It overclocks my 2.8c to 3.64 (30%).

I recommend an abit, board. Maybe a little fancy for what you are looking for, but they are definitely packed with all the latest bells and whistles. The IC7-G MAXII ADVANCE is around 130 bucks. If this is too much then I would look at ASUS or Gigabyte. All top notch motherboard manufacturers that always have tons of features incorporated on the boards.

I would personally stay away from ECS, Soyo, PC-Chips, or Biostar. Those boards are less expensive but lack features. Good Luck!!
