Please sticky? paypal warning for ebay sellers.

This is a warning to anyone selling on eBay and accepting paypal. While many people have raised concerns about the two, this one is particularly disturbing, and revolves around their "Buyer Protection Policy" dated October 10, 2003. After doing a deeper dive on this auction, where the buyer may be trying to swap components on me, it dawned on me.

If you are a seller with 50 or greater feedback and a 98% or better positive feedback ratio, and only accept paypal you "qualify" to have your auction sales be covered by the paypal buyer protection policy. A buyer, for any reason may lodge a claim against you for your item and have the entire sum returned to them without your authorization. This comes straight out of your balance, not eBay. It's your word against theirs, and if they claim something is somehow not in the condition as you advertised they can get a refund and you're out of luck!

There is a brief arbitration process where paypal goes through one iteration, but all decisions are final.

I have verified this with people I know @ eBay.

Is this how they repay their "best sellers?"

Ugh.

October 10th, 2003 update.

eBay almost bought my startup, we're very intimate. A love hate thing, although now I think it's firmly hate. 😀 I could have purchased their stock at $20 a share @ ipo. 🙁

they know they can get away with it now that c2it plus billpoint are dead. that's what happens when there's no competition. cept this time its two monpolies combined

threaten the guy that you will report him for mail fraud (assuming you sent it thru post office) and considering the evidence its pretty obvious

The DOJ had an investigation into eBay for monopolistic practices, they dismissed it though.

as a seller accepting Paypal....ALWAYS use delivery confirmation/tracking number.

btw, i say this because i've had someone claim they never got an item i sold them. i had the tracking number that showed it was delivered, and i got my Paypal back.

their policy does suck, though.

I've got another item that has DC, and it's not delivered. Damn post office is worthless, looks like it's going to cost me $50. 🙁

USPS money order.

no i mean between paypal or a merchant account such as 2checkout, which is better to use for the seller? I'm guessing paypal?

I'd say the best in convenience and safety is:

Accept only NON-CREDIT CARD PAYPAL (personal account) from a VERIFIED Paypal member and ship to a CONFIRMED address using an approved courier with TRACKING and SIGNATURE confirmation.

In what must be a psychic vision I've now got some Canadian trailer trash that just put a reversal like this on me for $226.21. Indeed, their eBay account is NARU.

Bump, maybe a sticky for this warning? 🙁

how do paypal take the money?

from your paypal or from your CC?

if it's from the CC i'll just scream rape(fraud) and get it refunded 😀

It comes out of your paypal balance. They cannot take it from anywhere else. I stay vigilant with keeping no $ in my paypal account but the stars aligned and the complaint rolled in 5 minutes after I received a sizable payment..

Hi iwearnosox,

Sorry for the delay in responding (vacation).

A buyer filing a Buyer Protection claim against a seller will not automatically mean that money is refunded to a buyer. In fact, a seller can largely determine how the case is worked because PayPal would only get involved if the two parties could not settle the dispute (the seller can refund, refund with return of the merchandise only, do a partial refund, refute the claim, etc.)

from that link, looks like the US options are:
UPS
FedEx
Airborne Express
DHL

Or maybe the ones that charge you 20 bucks and wait a week to send and tell you it will be there in 4 days and turns out a week later you are still looking for a package.

just leave your paypal balance always 0, if paypal tries to take the money back, your paypal account will be in the negative.

just tell paypal to fvck themselves and close the account

The many iterations of the so-called Paypal Buyer's Protection Policy - all are borne (in my opinion) of one purpose. To decrease the credit card chargeback rate against paypal. They want buyers to go through them instead of their CC for not-as-described claims.
This policy is RIPE for Fraud.

Not happy with your purchase? ... send a brick back with DC and get your money back and the product.
If you file a claim for a 'significantly not as described' item, you will generally be required to return the item to the seller, at your own expense. Buyers in the United States and Canada must use an online-trackable shipping method to return the item to the seller, and will be asked to provide the tracking number to PayPal.

Why do you think Paypal is limiting claims to 2 per year? hmmm. Do they know people will abuse the policy and SELLERS will get SCREWED?

Why is opting out of the Buyer's Protection program such as PITA? You have to call them, provide all sorts of information and then wait until they get their act together to remove you from the list? They were sure quick to institute the policy and integrate everything into the auctions but why so slow to remove you when you opt out?

Why so many different manifestations of the program? Last month, buyers had to send the items to paypal for so-called "paypal experts" to evaluate the items. WTF! like Paypal people want to determine if a diamond is a GIA F or J?
Now, buyers simply have to make a claim, and return "something" to get their money back.

Thanks but no thanks.
