Please review the Asus 1814 series optical drives, after you try to burn either 5-6 or 2-3 lightscribe labels, the drive will burn out on you, and Asus is doing nothing to remedy this problem, and consumers are being scammed out of they're money every day!

I bought a new Asus DRW-1814BLT that stopped doing everything except for reading dvd's after I burnt 5 or 6 lightscribe labls, so I RMA'd it, the replacemnt drive did the exact same thing after burning only 2 lightscribe labels.

I believe it is a factory defect with the entire 1814 series optical drives because the Asus forums loaded with posts about an endless amount of people having the same issue.

So after buying the drive for $55.00, spending $20.00 on RMA shipping just to have another defective drive sent back to me, then using up the last $23.00 in airtime I had waiting on hold for 45 minutes when I called Asus to speak to a second level technician to get a case number (which is required for a second RMA), who I never could get through too, and still haven't because now I don't have anymore airtime and won't until next pay day in the middle of February. I am stuck having paid double for a brand new optical drive that does not work, and I also have no phone anymore.

It is a common problem with the 1814's, these drives seem to be plagued with this problem, and Asus is doing nothing about it, and now I'm just another consumer who was screwed out of $100. It would be nice for someone to review these drives, all you have to do is try to burn 5 or 6 lightscribe labels and the drive will stop working for you, and then you will need to keep dishing out more $money$ just to have the problem not get resolved.

My RMA replacement drive was also a newer model, manufactured a few months after the original faulty drive, the issue is not being addressed, Asus support also says there are "no unresolved issues" with these drives, not true, please do the review and you'll see!

Please review these drives and this problem, again, just check the Asus forums. Thanks.

I had the exact same problem. I RMA'd mine too. Did one lightscribe label successfully and then the drive wouldn't recognize any lightscribe media or CD-ROMs. I could still burn DVDs, but I bought the drive for the lightscribe capability along with burning CDs and DVDs. I tried all recommended solutions on lightscribe.com and also tried updating the firmware, all to no avail. I didn't contact ASUS, but read enough horror stories that I thought it was in my best interest to just take the shipping and restocking fee loss and try something else. IMHO, something should be done to keep others from suffering the same fate as everyone else I've read about having all the same problems/issues with this drive.

We just got an Asus DRW-2014L1T at work to start converting our VHS collection to DVD (library, non-profit), it burns the data fine but I cannot get Lightscribe to work once. Using the latest drivers and template makers from Lightscribe.com, Verbatim discs with v1.2 Lightscribe. It recognizes everything fine, drive runs and light flashes for 20-60+ minutes, software says the image was successfully created, disc ejects and there is NOTHING on it!

Ditto.

I returned mine on RMA and received a new drive after... 6 ... weeks. Burned a DVD, flipped it over to scribe it, and it worked perfectly. Second disk - Burned the DVD, flipped it over, and bzzzt, no label, and now it can't do anything with CDs anymore, just DVDs. Just like the first one.

Vista RTM, all updates loaded. Using Nero 7 to burn the disks.

Note: I also had a Sony DRU-800A suffer the same fate.

Something is fishy in Lightscribe-Land, and it may not be just Asus - it may be a second-tier component.

The last good ASUS DVD burners were the pioneer based 16x DRW-1608P/P2/P3 models. After those they started making their own drives and have subsequently went downhill.

Well, through constant e-mailing I've finally gotten Asus to issue me a second RMA number without spending even more money on phone calls just to be placed on hold, but they still haven't offered to pay the shipping for the 2nd defective drive, I'll keep e-mailing them until they take responsibilty and pay the shipping. I'll keep you informed...

Yep - I'm afraid so. I've never had a problem with Asus before now, and their lack of support is a bit disturbing.

Well, a month later, and asus won't even respond to the Better Business Bureau, here's the letter I received from them today, not only does it make me wonder what point the better busniess bureau serves, I can't see any, but it also goes to show how asus is not taking responsibility and ripping people off. No other updates on the dvd-rw situation yet, here's what good the BBB does-

For the people voting "no", Anandtech shouldn't do the review, why not? My only guess is that you condone people being ripped off by company's like this, Maybe you work for asus !!!. Give reasons why.

So now Asus has stopped responding all together now, it seems they have legally gotten away with ripping me off, selling me a worthless piece of metal and plastic, and who knows how many others! Congraulations asus, here's another person who will never spend another penny on your garbage, and hope many others learn from this story. Since anandtech won't break the silence on this issue, guessing they're afraid to lose an almighty penny somewhere down the road, I'm sure I'll find a reputable media outlet with the balls to do what's right. Keep kissing asus's ass anandtech, your no better than they are anymore. Keep up the good work.

I sent my DRW-1814BL back on an RMA and am still waiting for the replacement to get here. From what I read across the board it seems that Lightscribe drives are a big problem no matter who the manufacture is. Looks like HP the developers of this tech dropped the ball somewhere and convinced others to produce this drive before all the bugs where worked out. I am not looking forward to getting the replacment back at this point as I believe that it will work for a few burns and labels then have the same issue all over again.
If that becomes the case I'll chalk this drive up as a total loss due to the fact it's not worth any further time or effort. On the same token ASUS doesn't seem to offer any info or help on this matter other that RMA it.
ONCE WILL BE ENOUGH and then it will become a paper weight.

Well it looks like I am eating CROW !
I received the RMA replacement about 4 weeks ago and it has performed ok printing labels and burning CD/DVD's thus far. Didn't want to leave a updated responce here till after I had some time fully testing the Drive.

Still have an issue writing to Memorex DVD+RW's, the drive refuses to write at speeds above 2x on these disks while my Samsung, LG & Philips drives have no problem writing to them at there rated 4x speed. Asus has yet to offer any newer firmware beyond ver1.13 dated 08-07. I am sure that this problem can be addressed with a new firmware revision.

I take back the last updated message I JUST SPIT OUT THE CROW !

The drive just took the CD & Label Making DUMP !

The replacment drive lasted for about 7 label prints and about the same in burns and now it's going to PAPER WEIGHT HEAVEN !

Asus keep your focus on making Great MotherBoards and stay away from hardware that has moving parts !

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With out a doubt this expertly engineered Asus DRW-1814BL is by far the very best
Paper Weight money can buy bar none. It's flawless in retaining the largest piles of
scrap and post-it memo's even in very windy conditions.

Pleasant to look at also, and the X-LOGO on the top is a great reminder on where to
place and retrieve your scrap notes.
