When the Division and Arkham Knight come out I plan on building a completely new machine to match specs however I may want to upgrade my GPU in the meantime.

I want to be able to play Tomb Raider and Bioshock infinite on Ultra and I think I just need a better card. Anything under $200 that would do the trick or is a new card not going to be enough?
 
A card under $200 will be a giant leap over the gtx460 in your sig, but will likely not be able to play any of those games on Ultra, and will likely really suffer in the Division and Arkham Night.

I would say suffer for now, and wait for the next generation of GPU's that should come later this year if you are set on that budget. Hopefully you will be able to pick up a card that is around gtx770/r9 280x performance at that time for around $200.

Sorry, I mean temporarily until I build the new machine get a card.

When I build for division and Knight I will be dropping a GPU in that over qualifies for whatever the specs need to be.

I am running the game on ultra now I found out. I guess I want to bump it to ultimate. What if I upgrade the GPU and keep my 460 as a dedicated physx?
 
What are your goals here? I can tell you a 200$ isn't going to run either of those titles maxed out @ ultra settings for a constant 60 fps. You will definitely get dips below that alot, especially with that CPU. This is, of course, assuming that you want to run at 1080p ultra maxed out.

I think you need to adjust your expectations or up your budget. Personally I think maxing games is pretty stupid since a lot of those settings do basically......nothing in terms of image quality. You can lower a few things without any IQ sacrifice while performance goes up dramatically. But I just don't know what your expectation here is. If you're expecting a constant 60 fps in those named games @ ultra settings, well, good luck. I'd say up the budget to 250$ or so for a GTX 760 or maybe even more. Or perhaps bite the bullet and upgrade the entire system. Your target is a bit low in terms of price for what you're asking.

So the questions become, are you expecting a fluid 60 fps? Are you okay with dips? Are you okay with lowering IQ settings? If you're not okay with lowering IQ settings (which I truly would not understand if so) then you need to...again....adjust expectations or up the budget and get whatever card you can in that price range.
 
yeaaaah so I just found out that changing the Hz changes the cap on framerate...so uhh im now @ 57fps average with the below settings. So how will a better card NOT give me enough to run at ultra? I can run at 8-11 fps now w/ultimate on

I would like to run 60fps as much as possible but honestly dont mind dipping to 45 or even 30 at times. Less than that is no bueno.

Running 1920x1080 60Hz on a Panasonic TC-P50S60

Im benchmarking @ 57fps, I havent ever seen it slow down and im 10hrs into the game.

I want to wait until the 2 games I mentioned are released before building a new rig because 1. I dont need anything until then and 2. Im sure prices will drop by then considering Arkham Knight doesnt come out for 7months and Divison even longer than that. Im sure the next Generation of cards will have released driving current cards down in price.

And even if you think maxing games is stupid, when I build a machine, especially for a specific game, I want it to balls over that game. I know If I am going to spend $1500+ I want to get the most out of it plus I just want to do it right. I look at it being a long term investment. My current machine is 5 or so years old and can still run current(ish) games ok. So my next one should at least last that long. I think it will be my last gaming machine as well so might as well go out on a bang.

It would help if you OCed your CPU to 4GHz or higher. Other than that, a Radeon 270 or 270X would be a very nice upgrade within the $200 budget. If you account for the rebate, that 7870 is a very good buy. But, if you do not like rebates and do not want to pay $5+ for shipping, here is a great Sapphire 270 for $190 shipped. Another thing you could do is hunt for newegg's open box deals. I snagged an Asus 270 last week for $140 :biggrin:

Powercolor Radeon 265 just came in stock! Hurry up and grab it while you still can for $150! Sapphire Dual X 265s usually sell out within a few hours of coming in stock @ $150. Very minimal performance difference between the 265 and 7870/270. Around 10-15% at most.

I run hd7870 with Phenom2 965 3,5Ghz and am GPU limited when playing mantle games and somewhat CPU bound in dx. This CPU will be enough for TR and BioShock. I no longer have those games, so I can't benchmark my system.

For the batman game, you want to have something from nv. Other than that - look for next gen cards later this year.

You made a good choice. I assume you're asking if you can run GTX 460 and 270X in the same system? I don't think there is a way to do it smoothly. 270X is going to be plenty for you and you will not need anything additional so you will have to uninstall your nvidia GPU & drivers before you switch to the AMD card and drivers.
 
That should work yes, you'll need to use molex to PCIe adapters though because the PSU has only two PCIe connectors. I'd use one of the stock PCIe connectors along with one via adapter for each card.
 
ok cool, Ill run the single card and see how it works.

Ive never swapped a GPU before. Since my motherboard has no video built in what are the steps to swapping cards?
 
Removing old card:
  1. uninstall drivers, reboot, clean drivers using Driver Sweeper
  2. turn off PC, disconnect the monitor cable from the card
  3. disconnect the PSU power cable (don't touch the 1/0 switch)
  4. open the case and make sure the motherboard power LED is off
  5. make sure you're grounded
  6. disconnect PCIe connectors from the card
  7. unscrew the card from the expansion slot, lift the latch holding the card in place (it's in the front end of the PCIe slot, above it)
  8. gently remove the card without touching the PCB directly, then put it in an antistatic bag (e.g. the one the card originally shipped in)

Installing new card:
  1. make sure you're grounded
  2. put the card into the PCIe slot (again, without touching the PCB directly) and tighten screw
  3. connect PCIe power cables
  4. connect PSU power cable and monitor cable
  5. turn the PC on
  6. if it works fine (not DOA or otherwise faulty), close the computer case
  7. download newest drivers and install

nice lay out; if you're not sure if you're ground or not; just before unplugging the PSU; touch it.....😉 then unplug it and you're grounded
 
what the shit is up with the shipping from that company. It hasnt shipped yet and its been how many days? F NCIXUS, Ill probably never order from there again.
 
Yep, NCIXUS isn't the swiftest shipping company in the US. They are also famous for selling cards that aren't in stock. I'd call them and ask if they have the card in stock.

Newegg currently has the MSI R9 270 Gaming for $180. The cooler will allow it to run a lot cooler, quieter and overclock better than the cheapo Club3D card. There's not a huge amount of performance difference between the 270 and the 270X. Feel free to swap to this one
