Please recommend a quality, reasonably priced clothes washer and dryer.

Which brands are best and most reliable and what features should I be looking for?

I'm guessing that between $500 - $1000 for both is budget range that will get me quality products that just aren't necessarily top of the line (?)

And any good online retailers, or do I need to go to Sears or some other big box store?

The g/f & I picked up a pair from LG's Tromm line, we've been very happy with them.

About $1300 for both (roughly 1/2 the price of the Kenmore Elite's that we nearly purchased).

No, $1000 for both won't be top of the line, but it'll get you a tolerable conventional washer, that will do the job for years. $2k for both will probably get you top of the line. I'd personally look at those that are priced at around $1400 - $1500 for both.

(I've recently been shopping for them, at Sears.)

avoid maytag. CR surveys show 5-10% fail rate for any brand but 22% for maytag

We got our Whirlpool Duets from HHGregg for around $1300 after accounting for taxes, delivery, and extended warranty.

Check out Craigslist.ORG for used appliances.

Sounds like $1500 or under is good price point for quality washer and dryer.

Please recommend specific brands and model numbers.

Also, what features am I buying at this price point, and what bricks and mortar retailers and webtailers are good sources to purchase from?

I hit the auctions quite a bit. If you don't mind used (and very gently used), you can often find sets in mint condition at estate sales. Everyone at such sales are generally interested in the antiques and other items. Very few people (in my experience) go to them to pick up used appliances. I've seen 1 year old washer and drier go for $50.
Of course, YMMV. If you're not in a hurry, it's a great way to go, and, like I said, if you don't mind that some old people did 1 load of laundry per week in them for a year or two.

Nice tip, thanks. I never really knew what estate sales were all about.

I've had a front load Fridgadare combo for about five years. They still make the matching washer dryer set and you can get them for around $1000.

Washer
Dryer

I was surprised to see the combo at Lowes just two days ago for about $1100 with tax.

That LG Tromm front loading pair looks nice.

Is $1300 before tax a good delivered price for the pair? And how low has this pair been in past?

Are washers typically installed by user (easy to do), or does delivery man do that?

If the hookups are there, it takes five minutes to get them hooked up. :D

And we've had a Kenmore set for...god...eight years? Not bad for a family of five, and all we had to replace was the lint collector from the dryer once.

I assume so.

Would just be put in spot where old washer and dryer were.

Basically plug and play (power cords, water lines, and exhaust vent?)?

Is it worth jumping up from entry level LG Tromm washer dryer (WM2016cw and dle2516w) to LG Tromm steamwasher dryer (WM2487H and DLE7177) at about $2000 per pair (vs $1300 per pair for entry LG Tromm)?

there have been a few other washer threads in the past 4 weeks. go search... oh wait...

$500 for both means top loader washing machine, because front loader would cost at least $700.

sears (on sale) would be best bet for top loader/dryer combo. nowadays, all top loaders will wash about the same (ie: lousy) because of the new EPA "green" rules where washers must use less water. less water = dirtier clothes.

sears has like a $250 washer when on sale. plus they give a combo discount if bought w/matching dryer. and you can get parts easily if anything needs fixing 7yrs from now.

Is there any difference in reliability / longevity between Sears $500 toploader combo and something like LG frontloaders (entry level $1300 pair or $2000 steamwash pair)?

And other than not cleaning as well, do the $500 budget Sears pair damage or destroy clothes over time?

You could just throw out clothes you've worn, and then you'll get to wear new sh!t all the time.
