Trying to research a "storage" drive for all my Youtube videos and such.. but there are so many choices out there these days.

What is the best price / performance drives these days?

WD makes drives but has so many colors, blue, red, green, black, pink, etc..

Or just buy the cheapest and largest capacity one can afford?

thnx.

Storage that is backed up is the most reliable.

Past that, the 5400 RPM Green/Eco drives are slow. The Red and NAS drives have slightly longer warranties, and are slightly faster (due to not trying to save power without being told to). The regular 7200 RPM drives are faster than those, and a good general choice.

If it's all just copies of big streaming media files, buy cheap, so you can buy more over time.

The only downside to the HDD I linked earlier is that it only has a 2 year warranty. But at only $99 for 3TB, you shouldn't complain because it will be tough to beat that price per GB/TB.

Pretty much this. I have or have had most of the leading brands of HDDs... they all work pretty well and the prices are pretty much equal between brands when you compare apples to apples. My favorites lately have been the 2TB Seagate Barracuda, but I would probably jump at that 3TB Toshiba for $99... 😉

This is EXACTLY my sentiment as well

Have 3 Seagates, 3 WDs, and a Toshiba totaling 17TB. Oldest one is 6 years old, newest one is from late 2013. Least favourite is the WD Green, favourite is the WD Red, and neutral on the Seagates and Toshiba though they all work fine.

when did Toshiba come into the HDD market? That's a new one for me.

3TB's for 99~ is pretty good, next question is, formatting these takes a long time? Do you just do a quick format in windows is that still the norm?
