Please recommend AMD CPU for this MB

What is the primary use for this computer?

Phenom II 965 is a good CPU, cannot go wrong with that.
 
I have a similar, same brand and chipset board in my HTPC running a 965. Works perfect. I have it encoding video as we speak.

I would drop a 1055t in it myself if your looking in the price range, and overclock it. If your not O/C'ing like me in my HTPC, then go with the 965. It idles at incredibly low power usage levels, and overall with Cool and Quiet, but has some juice when needed like encoding, etc.

General computer. I have an XP Pro fast computer for video editing, but my general purpose computer is an older BX board running Windows 98SE. Also have a good laptop. Haven't used non-Intel boards yet. This will be my first.

I may get that one. Thanks to everyone for all this help. More than anyone could ask for. Mild overclock, stock fan and heatsink. $100. Sounds like a good choice.

You can get dual core Athlon IIs for under $50. Put the money saved towards a SSD, you'll get a 'snappier' system feel for sure.

Actually although I use a separate computer for video editing, I may use this one for that so the quad core is probably worth the extra few dollars.

To answer your question: No, it should work just fine. The reason it was not listed is cos its a new chip.

Do you mind if I ask you why you are going with this particular one, when you can buy a 1055T at the same price?

I don't think the extra cores will be utilized on a 1055T even with my Vegas video editing software and the 970 is a faster cpu with an unlocked multiplier.

I do not have any experience with that software.. so I cannot comment on that.

Generally speaking, a 1055T can be easily overclocked to 3.5Ghz with turbo on(You might have to bump the voltage slightly).

The way I see it, under the present conditions, a X4 970 is not a good value.

Agreed. Things are just going to get more multithreaded going forward. Spending the same on a PhII X4 vs. a PhII X6 doesn't make sense. Overclocking PhII X4/X6 even without the Black Editions isn't hugely difficult. I have a PhII 805 (stock 2.5Ghz) running happily at 3.5Ghz, and it was not an unlocked CPU. 3.5ghz or higher is child's play on any X6 AFAIK.
