right now i have a 3com Home Ethernet Gateway that i bought couple years ago. i recently subscribed to SBC dsl and am using their SpeedStream modem. the connection never drops when i plug the dsl modem straight into my computer. but when i go through the 3com router, it constantly drops...i'm getting fed up and want to buy another router but there are so many out there. i just need one with 4 ports. i was looking at the linksys BEFSR41 and BEFSX41. i dont know what the difference between the two is except the price. can somebody recommend a good one around 50-60 dollars? thank you much.

i was thinking of getting the BEFSR41 too, because its $15 cheaper and i dont know what the extra option on the BEFSX41 does...

Netgear or IBM will own. Linksys is overpriced and can often times have the weirdest problems.

D-Link...thats what I have (a Di-604) and have no problems. My friends who has a linksys, can't direct connect on AIM with me, where as my other friends who have Dlinks I can connect with.

I have MS router MN-500 (base station) and MN-510 (USB adapter). I have them just because I got them for almost free! ;)

I had trouble doing the setup since my DSL provider uses PPPoe, but as usual I managed to get out of the trouble. Everything works perfectly fine. I don't know though, since I'm not a router expert.

The BEFSX41 offers SPI over the BEFSR41. You're going to get much more security out of the X and it's well worth the $15 IMHO.

I like both the d-link and linksys equip. not a fan of netgear, as too much of their stuff requires the good'ol telnet session, and are generally a pain to configure, they work fine, but why pay more to go through extra hassle? I've heard microsofts equip is good too, although I haven't run any of their stuff myself.

I recommend BEFSX41, it build in Firewall and VPN. I loved this router and very stable, easy config using web brower. You can get the BEFSX41 for $59.99 from Newegg

PS. Linksys is owned by Cisco which is number one in Router business.

netgear makes a great product. get one with a true firewall though, using more than just NAT; it should also use SPI, have Denial of service protection among other features; also look at how often they come out with firmware.

also...wifi can be a nice feature to share some of that bandwidth

I am having the same problem, trying to find another router. I currently have LInksys BEFSR41 v2. I am getting disconnected every 20 mins; some other consumers have told me Linksys sometimes has problems like this. So, I am still boggled on which router i should get next?

NETGEAR or LINKSYS again???

Good luck networking . .

I tried the BEFSX41 and it seemed to slow down the connection and I got higher pings in games. I now have a BEFSR81.
