I just reinstalled windows on my old desktop. Need some programs to play video and music. What are the best solutions these days?

It's all personal preference really but I like foobar2000 for music, and media player classic with the cccp codec pack for movies. I also use VLC from time to time for movies.

I'm using WMP11 with K-Lite Codec Pack for everything. Works great.

I have been using foobar2000 for a very very long time for music. It offered the best sound quality. Now I find WMP11 to be similar, so I don't bother.

As for movies, I also have MPC HomeCinema, however I don't use it anyway, came with the Codec Pack. Was using MPC back in XP days. Under Vista WMP11 works for everything for me. I don't bother using 3rd party stuff.

Why does anyone bother with codec packs nowadays when VLC plays almost everything?

I couldn't have agreed more with you abaez. VLC player gets rid of the codec hassles in a cinch!
