To help people new to this particular forum, here are some suggestions that can help you make more effective posts, especially the all-important initial topics. Ideally this will help you receive faster, more accurate and more helpful responses to your questions.

* Before posting, search MS TechNet or other technical resources for a solution first.
* Read AT's Networking FAQs before posting a new topic.
* Search the current and archived threads for your issue before posting (many threads are simply rehashes of other threads).
* State the problem (with intended outcome) as clearly as possible.
* Use a descriptive thread title.
* Include as much relevant information as you can in the initial post.
* Be polite.
* Keep in mind that MANY people lurk here to gain knowledge and info, so try to communicate lucidly.
* If your problem is resolved (with the forum's help or not), PLEASE update the thread and include the solution.
* After the problem is resolved, please add "**RESOLVED**" to your thread title.

There is only one type of post that isn't welcome in AT's Networking Forum:
* Please refrain from asking for information or help carrying out illegal or prohibited activity. This includes circumventing access or bandwidth control devices, anonymous proxying, or spamming, among others.

Sorry TallGeese,

You're not a moderator. I love ya man and its getting a little old with the "how do I hack" threads I agree. But I don't think we need any rules. Just like other forums folks, can post away as they please.

Thankfully for ATNET, there is one and only one flammable offense. Just one.

-edit- but AMD is so much more funner better right?

I think those are good guidlines... but I agree with Spidey07 that they don't have to be strict rules.

I need to stop lurking here and post more though... my network touch is slipping :p

Ditto.

I saw trav's thread in Forum Issues complaining about "rudeness" in this forum.
I'm attempting to do something constructive about it with this thread.

So, now, I'll suggest you take a bit of YOUR own advice:
as your homely mother once told you.. if you dont have anything nice to say...
P.S. trav's inclusion of more 1337-speak than relevant info about his question really ended up being the heart of that particular matter.

So my comment

is actually right on. Check the reactions to trav's thread in Forum Issues if you don't agree with me, since it seems other folks do.

Nice list. I wouldn't mind seeing something like this posted at the top of the forums. If that were done, I'd probably include a link to the FAQs.

I do wish more people would come back and let you know when a solution worked, and if so which one. Could be helpful for the future. Also, threads with titles like "Help!!!" or "network problem" aren't too helpful. I'll read most threads that pertain to topics I am interested in but I'll skip a lot of others, including some which I might have been interested in had I realized what it was about.

Relevant info should include OS.

To be charitable, some people may not realize that something is illegal or frowned down on - what you think may be a problem with your setup may be deliberate blocking by others. So I wouldn't ban such requests but I would educate people about them.

If you will notice in this thread I handled this one pretty good. I explained to him that there was no way around it, the purpose that is serves, and other ways to go about transferring files. I think my response to this thread was a little more acceptable than others. At least I didn't jump on the guy.

Right I was out of line as well but I didn't call you names. I was just implying that I don't think you have any room to make or propose these rules if you do not follow them.

Why should I kiss and make up? My post got locked for "violating" the rules. It has clearly not violated any rules. I wont stand for this Im sorry.

I consider telling someone to ignore someone else completely and/or calling someone else's post "worthless" to be the epitome of rudeness on AT.
I was just implying that I don't think you have any room to make or propose these rules if you do not follow them.
And again, these are SUGGESTIONS to help improve this forum.

I didn't come up with all the suggestions.
Many of them came from other members of this forum.
Others suggested important wording changes and feedback to some proposed suggestions.
I only offered to maintain the thread, and include other suggestions as they were offered.

I didn't sticky this thread, the mods did, so they must agree with the suggestions.

I agree with spidey...I'm not in favor of hard and fast rules in this forum.
It tends to squash discussion, rather than foster it.

The only rule that does seem to have been set (in another stickied thread) is the issue of asking for advice or help in circumventing network or access policies.
A rule that I AM in favor of, incidentally.

All that aside, if you wanna hash out personal stuff with someone (like me), I'd suggest turning on PM in your profile, rather than taking up thread space.
Of course, that's only a suggestion...not a rule.

I still consider the matter closed...altho it seems to keep popping up for some strange reason(s).

I think your post got locked for two reasons:
* You yourself posted that you resolved the issue
* narzy requested that it be locked, since it continued to draw posts about the issue of circumvention (disclaimer: I also continued to post on it)
I wont stand for this Im sorry.
Then why are you ranting here? Seems to me the more effective course of action would be to go to the mods about it.

ok, then turn on your PM's and keep it between you, TallGeese, and the Mods... I'm here to learn, not watch a soap opera.

I was flamed a few times when I first posted in AT/Networking... At first I thought it was rude, then I realized I wasn't the first person to ask the difference between a hub and a switch ;). My ignorance was the fault there, and I don't blame the regulars for getting frustated every now and then...

anyways, that's my piece... make of it what you will.

Oh and welcome to the forums travisio :)
