You retarded douche, read the OP and you'll see that the system uses DDR2 memory. While grossly overpriced and offering no performance benefits it's by no means proprietary. While I'm not a fan of Dell, it's a good system for the price.

It's just funny on so many levels 😀 What do people seriously think, a sticker on the case reading "Dell" makes the same or inferior hardware faster? That a system which doesn't allow overclocking is faster than one which does when the ability is utilized? That a 6800nu or an Intel chip = the pinnacle of gaming performance? FYI An AMD-equivalent chip (ie. 3400+ vs. Intel's 3.4ghz model) yields 15% higher framerates in most games (assuming the video card isn't very outdated and that you're not playing games in 640x480) while costing a good deal less money. Their video encoding performance is roughly equal, though Intel used to hold the advantage in this vs AMD's old XP line of chips. Added bonus is that the A64s don't idle at temperatures approaching that of nuclear explosions :laugh: And Intel isn't expected to have a 64bit chip until a good six months or so after Longhorn is released... sorry man, but you wasted your money. It's nothing to be ashamed of, we've all had our blunders.

What I am saying is take a P4 800fsb / 875P combo from Dell and put it against a stock DIY set-up and it will run faster than alot of stock units.

B. Read A again until it sinks in.

This is not about AMD , I love AMD and plan on building an Athlon 64 set-up when the 3500+ gets into the budget price range....but thats not what this thread is about now is it?


I personally have a Dell 8300 that I bought from their refurbed area....after selling the ram and video card out of it I had a P4 3ghz 800fsb system for $230 ...added my own 2ghz of ram and a 6800GT for $650 and there it is... $870 for a game rig that does the job to my satisfaction.
No I cannot OC the ram, no I cannot adjust anything on the mobo other than a few minor things.


Can an AMD 3500+ platform set-up beat it? Well of course again though..thats not the topic here.

My honest opinion is if I can't open my computer and change something, then I've wasted my money.
Don't get me wrong, I bought a DELL, but after thinking about the consequences, it went right back to them. I know that at the rate technology is going, I'll end up upgrading something within 6-8 months. If not, I can sell my computer, and the thing is it will have a better resale value then any branded PC.

What's the point of having a peice of technology when you can't upgrade it?

Bottom line is that you cannot build a system like this at the price he got. Some DIY'ers need to live with the fact that buying OEM with mass coupons/sale + some minor upgrades is better.

DIY'ers making up stuff like Dell is all Proprietary, totally Un-upgradeable, PSU deficient, uses cheap parts, or magically slower than a DIY system with the same specifications are living in 1995.

I used to be an AMD junkie and a DIY'er, but after buying some dell's for my family, I'm a Dell junkie. The main reason why is that they are so quiet. Most of the machines I've built are loud as hell. Dell's on the other hand are whisper quiet. Plus their price nowadays are hard to beat. Now, I'm just waiting for a similar deal on the dimensions like they had for the laptops a few weeks ago.

Intel already has a 64 bit chip...its just a rediculously expensive Xeon, but it is available. Check out the Nocona core'd Xeon's.

All I WILL say is I give the OP a rating of 9/10 for his machine. Great machine at a great price. Like M4H said, I'd get new speakers but the ones you got should be ok. It will play HL2 very nicely.

Hrm, maybe I read what I read out of context, and it's that they're not expected to have a common, $200-$300 64bit desktop chip out for a while then... either way, the OP's chip isn't and Longhorn's-a-comin'.

Retarded flamers aside, don't buy into the garbage that the 8400 can't be upgraded or that the memory is proprietary or that you can't add PCIe and PCI cards (the tool free case is great, btw). Ask them how many of them have PCI-e AMD64 setups.
