Well, I hate to say it, but I knew it was too good to be true. For a year and a half now with the help of fellow Anandtechers I have commited my mastercard to just about every deal that OD had to offer. Living 1.2 miles from the nearest one made it easy. The local employees saw me more often than their own spouses. We are on a first name basis!
With a very soft economy this corporate move should be fast and furious. I have to believe that the deals will be hot. So I say, "Let the deals begin". Post 'em up here!
Sorry old friend, we hate to see you go.

The company said it will close 67 underperforming stores in the United States, including 20 in Ohio, and three in Ontario, Canada. It will abandon markets in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, Phoenix and Boston. (From Reuters)

As you state that you are so close to them why don't you make a real start and POST a hot deal here?
Isn't this what the forum is about?
And that way you'd make sure that this doesn't get locked up!

Well, not sure if this is a coincident or not, but one of the OD in San Francisco just burned down to the ground...well not exactly...(just a fire in the store). A fire sale soon, I hope. ;)

NO TEXAS???? C'mon boys, close the one near my house. It's taking up too much space and we can definately build a strip joint there, none in my town. Ok, that was a JOKE! Anyhow, i'm curious to why none in Texas. Good sale maybe. Thanks for the info. regardless.

I briefly worked for Office America, a store very similar to OD and Staples, while going to Ohio State in Columbus.

What the heck happened to that company?!?!?

At any rate, they just opened an Office Depot here in Alhambra, CA. Talk about a "Shake & Bake" operation. It seems like they just broke ground on that puppy. I can't imagine that they'd close it. There are always people in there...usually monopolizing the copy machines.

Hmmm...at 5 cents a copy...maybe it will go. Doh!

YES, my local od should be closed down, and if a strip joint replaces it, IT WILL BE THE DEAL OF THE YEAR!

I would gladly trade a couple of the local strip joints for an Office Depot or Staples.

No Illinois... though you would have thought so with the shortage of customers ever in their store here. I only went in there for deals because they increased the cost of their copies!

:)

Oregon has been spared! Now if the office depot wasn't such a pain to get to (lousy stinkin' traffic, and that whole 2 hour drive thing...grumble, grumble...hehe). The OfficeMax and the Staples are about 5 miles from here, but the OD is just too far away for me to take advantage of it too often.

well, none closing in virginia either, but that is good and bad. The closing store means that there are going to be price drops there to get rid of stock. Since my OD isnt closing that means no deal for me :( The good part is that since they are going to still be around, hopefully something will come up in the future! :)

So, if I'm in Ohio and they close all their B&M's here does that mean I won't get charged sales tax for my online purchases?

And from what I heard, they still plan on opening over 50 new stores this year...

They're not going anywhere, just trying to get into better areas

They're not going out of business. They are only closing stores in dense areas where they have too much overlapping coverage. Or where they have an insignificant market share. With the replacement of their top leadership (usurped by the leadership acquired with their Viking purchase), they are in dire need of a stock value increase. They just got done buying back a decent chunk of shares, also.

They are also having problems pushing the entrenched competition out of their bunkers in the northeast, a market OD would love to get a piece of.

Another problem with this thread is that it is very limited to the locality of the closing OD.
Not yet a single hint from your first name friends, PapaHurls?
