I installed my cabel modem, but I can't open urls. I can ping IPs but not URLs. Tech Support had me check and I could ping the DNS. The tech then told me that the only other thing that could be wrong was in the winsock file, but that he could not help me. He said that Microsoft would not allow them to troubleshoot this file. He told me that the winsock file would have to be extracted. Can anyone help me out with this? Any other ideas?

OS - Win ME
SMC Ethernet
Motorola Surfboard 4100 Modem

To restore the WSOCK32.DLL file (which gets changed by viruses, trojans and chat programs) in Windows ME:

1. Clean boot into DOS using a WinME startup disk with CDROM support.
2. Place Windows ME CDROM in drive.
3. Type in the following command from the A:> prompt:
extract/a e:\win9x\precopy1.cab wsock32.dll /l c:\windows\system

(assuming your CDROM is in the E drive)
4. Wait until the A prompt appears again (it takes a while because of WinME file protection scheme).
5. Reboot. In Windows, check the file date of WSOCK32.DLL. It should be 6/8/00 (WinME).

If you have Win98, the method is easier if you can get into SFC. Simply extract the WSOCK32.DLL from either c:\windows\options\cabs (if you have an OEM install), or d:\win98 (assuming your CDROM is the D drive. File dates should be 5/11/98 for Win98 First Ed and 4/23/99 for Second Ed.
