You honestly think it was a worse situation for the V2SLI?
No, I think it was better. Like you said, the selection of benchmarks it had to win back then was tiny.
The R9700Pro would have to best the NV40 in pretty much everything to be comparable to the V2 SLI.
I disagree, mainly because the market is totally different now. Winning today means a lot more than winning back then, especially if winning involves crushing the previously dominating card from the competition.
They have the V3 2K almost identical to the performance of the V2 SLI setup and that was the part that was reasonably priced.
They were using initial Voodoo3 drivers in CPU limited rigs. Crank up the resolution on faster CPUs with later drivers and even the V3
2000 is much faster than the V2 SLI. I experienced several 3dfx drivers that raised performance significantly at higher resolutions in games like Quake, Quake II and Quake III, sometimes as much as 10%-20%.
